Objective To investigate whether there are differences in learning outcomes after the application of self-determined (intrinsic motivation) or mandatory (extrinsic motivation) use of e-learning units in an undergraduate radiology internship. Methods 96 medical students undergoing a one-week radiology internship were included in this study. Ten electronic cases (e-cases) were created for a blended learning approach. The e-learning environment was accessed on a self-determined (group B; n = 32) or a mandatory basis (group C; n = 32). A group without access to the e-learning environment served as control group (group A; n = 32). Usage parameters of the e-cases were recorded. Results of a pre-and post-course assessment were used to quantitatively analyze learning outcomes. Results In group B 19/32 (59%) students processed at least one e-case, while in group C all students processed at least one e-case. There was a trend towards a higher improvement in knowledge in students exposed to a blended learning approach (group B: 13.7%; group C: 15.4%) than in the control group (group A: 8.5%; p = 0.5356). Group C processed (p = 0.0093) and passed (p = 0.0078) significantly more e-cases, than with group B. There were no significant differences in the mean time per e-case and the total time on e-cases between both groups. Conclusion Extrinsic motivation results in a more extensive use of e-learning units in an undergraduate radiology internship when compared with intrinsic motivation. The choice of the teaching strategy has a bigger influence on learning outcomes than the type of motivation, highlighting the need for qualified medical teachers. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Summary: This review provides guidance on assessing the exposure of pregnant women to X-rays and determining the dose to the unborn child. In general, the use of X-rays in pregnant women in radiology should be avoided, with alternatives or postponement of examinations recommended. Low radiation exposures under 20 mSv are typically found in the vast majority of cases in X-ray diagnostics for the unborn child, with higher doses only occurring in a few types of examinations.

Summary: Interventional radiology has evolved into a recognized clinical specialty, focusing on minimally invasive patient care. By describing principles of practice, organizational standards, and infrastructure, the quality of care in IR can be improved. IR procedures cover a wide range of medical conditions and interventional radiologists are responsible for the ultimate outcomes of patient care.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential benefits of digital variance angiography (DVA) in selective lower limb angiography and compared two DVA algorithms (conventional DVA1 and the recently developed DVA2) with digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Regardless of the contrast agent used, both DVA algorithms showed increased contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and significantly better image quality than DSA. DVA1 was preferred for its identical or better image quality compared to DVA2. DVA has the potential to aid in interventional decision-making and could potentially help with dose management in the future.

Myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension are determined by changes in volumetric function rather than by hemodynamic alterations

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking-derived myocardial strain parameters and volumetric function and hemodynamic parameters in patients with pulmonary hypertension. The results showed that impairment of myocardial strains was more strongly associated with alterations in ventricular function parameters than elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, limiting the diagnostic information of myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the imaging characteristics and prognostic factors for the long-term survival of Behcet's disease (BD) with arterial involvement. The results showed that arterial lesions associated with BD usually involve multiple arteries and manifest differently in different types of arteries. Cardiac involvement and pulmonary artery aneurysm/dilation were independent prognostic factors for the survival of BD patients with arterial involvement.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of tin prefiltration and virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) in suppressing metal artifacts in high-resolution CT images of the lower extremities. The results showed that VMI reconstructions had better artifact reduction compared to T3D. VMI110keV had the least image noise. In terms of image quality, interpretability of bone-metal interface, and overall image quality, VMI110keV performed the best.
