Objective: To compare MRI evaluation of a painful hindfoot of patients with spondyloarthritides (SpA) on low-field (0.2 T) versus high-field (1.5 T) MRI. Materials and methods: Patients with SpA and hindfoot pain were randomly referred to either high-field or low-field MRI. Twenty-seven patients were evaluated (male/female: 17: 10; mean age: 39 +/- 1.4 years). Fifteen patients were examined by low-field and 12 by high-field MRI. Two patients (evaluated by high-field MRI) were excluded. Images were separately read by two radiologists who later reached a consensus. In each patient the prevalence of erosions, fluid, synovitis or bone marrow edema of the hindfoot joints, tendinosis or tenosynovitis of tendons, enthesitis of the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon and retrocalcaneal bursitis were recorded. Clinical and demographic parameters were comparable between both groups. Results: MRI evaluation of joints and tendons of the hindfoot revealed no significant differences in patients with SpA groups for all parameters. Analyzing all joints or tendons together, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Low-field and high-field MRI provide comparable information for evaluation of inflammatory hindfoot involvement. Thus, low-field MRI can be considered as a reliable diagnostic tool for the detection of hindfoot abnormalities in SpA patients. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Anatomical variation of the sacroiliac joint carries an increased risk for erosion and bone marrow oedema in axial spondyloarthritis

Katharina Ziegeler, Sevtap Tugce Ulas, Denis Poddubnyy, Fabian Proft, Valeria Rios Rodriguez, Judith Rademacher, Kay Geert A. Hermann, Torsten Diekhoff

Summary: Joint shape variations are associated with inflammatory lesions on SI joint MRIs in axSpA patients. This should be taken into consideration in future research on the interplay of mechanical strain and inflammation in axSpA.

Is it time to move on from pelvic radiography as the first-line imaging modality for suspected sacroiliitis?

Iris Eshed, Torsten Diekhoff, Kay Geert A. Hermann

Summary: Pelvic radiography is recommended as the initial imaging modality for suspected axSpA, but CT and MRI are superior for diagnosing sacroiliitis. Recent findings suggest that low-dose CT of the sacroiliac joints and MRI with sequences sensitive to cortical bone are more accurate and reliable than radiographs.

Summary: Since its market approval in 2011, the use of rivaroxaban, a direct oral anticoagulant, has significantly increased in Europe. The baseline characteristics of new rivaroxaban users with non-valvular atrial fibrillation in Germany and the Netherlands have changed over time, with an increasing proportion of patients in Germany not using oral anticoagulants prior to starting rivaroxaban and an increasing proportion of patients in the Netherlands having heart failure at baseline.

Katharina Platzbecker, Helge Mueller-Fielitz, Ronja Foraita, Matthias J. Koepp, Annemarie Voss, Rene Pflock, Roland Linder, Iris Pigeot, Tania Schink, Markus Schwaninger

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) affects the risk of epilepsy compared to treatment with the vitamin K antagonist phenprocoumon (PPC). The results showed that patients with AF treated with DOACs had a higher risk of epilepsy compared to PPC treatment.

Dual-Energy-CT for Osteitis and Fat Lesions in Axial Spondyloarthritis: How Feasible Is Low-Dose Scanning?

Dominik Deppe, Katharina Ziegeler, Kay Geert A. Hermann, Fabian Proft, Denis Poddubnyy, Felix Radny, Marcus R. R. Makowski, Maximilian Muhle, Torsten Diekhoff

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of low-dose dual-energy computed tomography (ld-DECT) virtual non-calcium (VNCa) images to detect bone marrow pathologies in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Sixty-eight patients underwent both ld-DECT and MRI for assessment. The accuracy of ld-DECT in detecting osteitis and fatty bone marrow deposition was evaluated, and correlations with MRI were calculated. The results showed that ld-DECT had limited sensitivity and specificity in detecting these pathologies, and higher radiation might be needed for more accurate analysis.

Myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension are determined by changes in volumetric function rather than by hemodynamic alterations

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking-derived myocardial strain parameters and volumetric function and hemodynamic parameters in patients with pulmonary hypertension. The results showed that impairment of myocardial strains was more strongly associated with alterations in ventricular function parameters than elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, limiting the diagnostic information of myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the imaging characteristics and prognostic factors for the long-term survival of Behcet's disease (BD) with arterial involvement. The results showed that arterial lesions associated with BD usually involve multiple arteries and manifest differently in different types of arteries. Cardiac involvement and pulmonary artery aneurysm/dilation were independent prognostic factors for the survival of BD patients with arterial involvement.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of tin prefiltration and virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) in suppressing metal artifacts in high-resolution CT images of the lower extremities. The results showed that VMI reconstructions had better artifact reduction compared to T3D. VMI110keV had the least image noise. In terms of image quality, interpretability of bone-metal interface, and overall image quality, VMI110keV performed the best.

Summary: This study aimed to develop CT radiomics models to preoperatively identify lymph node (LN) status in resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. The results showed that the combined model, integrating ESCC and LN radiomics features with clinical features, had the highest predictive ability among the three models. The combined model's predictive ability was validated in both the test and external validation cohorts.
