Does thyroid function influence fracture risk? Prospective data from the HUNT2 study, Norway

Abstract

Objective: To prospectively study the relation between TSH and risk of hip and forearm fractures. Design: A population-based cohort study. Methods: In a substudy of the second survey of the Nord Trondelag Health Study, Norway (HUNT2, 1995-97), linked with a hospital-based fracture registry, we investigated the relation between baseline TSH and risk of hip and/or forearm fractures. Population: A total of 16 610 women and 8595 men aged 40 years or more, without previous self-reported thyroid disease and hip or forearm fractures. Results: During 12.5 years follow-up, a total of 1870 women and 342 men experienced hip or forearm fractures. Overall, there was no relation between baseline TSH and fracture risk. However, there was weak evidence that women with TSH <0.5 and >3.5 mU/l had a slightly increased risk of hip fractures (hazard ratio (HR) 1.30, 95% CI 0.97-1.94 and HR 1.19, 95% CI 0.93-1.52) compared with the reference group with TSH of 1.5-2.4 mU/l. Supplementary analyses showed higher hip fracture risk in women with TSH >4.0 mU/l and negative thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) compared with the reference group (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.24-2.46). Conclusion: We found no statistically significant relation between baseline TSH and subsequent fracture risk, but the data suggest a weak positive association with hip fracture risk among women with both low and high TSH. The latter association was confined to women with negative TPOAb status.

Does rehabilitation setting influence risk of institutionalization? A register-based study of hip fracture patients in Oslo, Norway

Summary: The setting in which hip fracture patients receive rehabilitation is associated with their likelihood of institutionalization, with patients who received rehabilitation outside of an institution having a lower risk of being admitted to a nursing home. This suggests that providing rehabilitation at home may be favorable in reducing institutionalization risk for hip fracture patients.

Does autonomic nervous system dysfunction influence cardiovascular disease risk in young adults with intellectual disability?

Summary: The study showed that young adults with intellectual disability have autonomic dysfunction and increased cardiovascular risk factors compared to control adults. Autonomic dysfunction was more pronounced in those with severe disability, independent of cardiovascular parameters. Assessment of autonomic nervous system function may provide insight into cardiometabolic disease development in this population.

Pulse Pressure Variability and the Risk of Fragility Fracture: The Kailuan Prospective Cohort Study in China

Potential of Health Insurance Claims Data to Predict Fractures in Older Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study

Summary: The study assessed the potential of using German claims data to predict the risk of fractures in older adults. The results showed moderate performance of the models, with the highest predictive performance achieved by combining information on drugs and morbidities. However, the predictive performance was lower in the 85+ age group. Therefore, it may still be worthwhile to explore the cost-benefit ratio of interventions based on these prediction models for certain risk groups.

Risk of hip fracture in meat-eaters, pescatarians, and vegetarians: a prospective cohort study of 413,914 UK Biobank participants

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations of assisted reproductive technology (ART) conception with offspring cardiometabolic health outcomes and whether these associations differ with age. The researchers found small and statistically non-significant differences in offspring cardiometabolic outcomes between ART-conceived and naturally conceived offspring. The study concluded that these findings should reassure individuals receiving ART, but longer-term follow-up is needed to investigate changes in the risks of hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and cardiovascular disease over adulthood.

Summary: Linkage analysis has been an important method for mapping disease-causing genes in families for decades. However, traditional linkage methods are computationally inefficient for larger datasets. In this study, we introduce Population Linkage, a novel application of Haseman-Elston regression, which improves computational efficiency by using modern methods for IBD segment detection and variance component estimation. We successfully detected known genetic signals for blood lipid traits in a large population sample and demonstrated the potential of linkage analysis for large-scale applications.

All-cause and cardiovascular mortality after hysterectomy and oophorectomy in a large cohort (HUNT2)

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a Norwegian population. The results showed that hysterectomy was associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, while bilateral oophorectomy was not significantly associated with mortality. Among women aged 52 and below, both procedures were associated with a twofold increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

Summary: Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies suggest that educational attainment has beneficial effects on adult health outcomes. However, these estimates may be biased due to population stratification, assortative mating, and indirect genetic effects. Using both population and within-sibship MR approaches, this study provides evidence that genetic liability to educational attainment is associated with decreased BMI, cigarette smoking, and SBP, and potentially with mortality.

Role of fungal burden in risk stratification of HIV-negative patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia: A 12-year, retrospective, observational, multicenter cohort

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of fungal burden in risk stratification of non-HIV-negative patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). The results showed that higher fungal burden was associated with a higher risk of 30-day mortality. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) could also improve the risk stratification. Comorbid cardiovascular disease, solid tumors, immunological disorders, premorbid corticosteroids, hypoxemia, abnormal leukocyte counts, low serum albumin, and C-reactive protein >100 were also independently associated with 30-day mortality.

The causal role of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 on anxiety and depression symptoms and life satisfaction: Mendelian randomisation analyses in the HUNT study

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that serum CRP levels may modestly increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as reduce life satisfaction. However, the causal role of IL-6 in these mental health outcomes was not supported by the findings. Therefore, the conclusions do not align with the recent suggestion that serum CRP may lower anxiety and depression symptoms.
