Summary: Environmental managers and policy-makers require reliable evidence for effective decision-making. Rapid reviews, which use truncated methods compared to systematic reviews, are growing in prevalence for environmentally-relevant topics. However, the use of shortcuts and adherence to guidelines in rapid reviews vary greatly. Future rapid reviews should focus on improved reporting and adherence to guidelines to enhance usability and user confidence.

Summary: In this article, we summarize the findings of a project supported by the EU that focused on policy analyses for managing pandemics like Covid-19. The study considered various mitigation levels and consequences and used decision trees and multi-criteria hierarchies for systematic policy analyses. The results showed the feasibility of the model in real-time policy-making for pandemic mitigation measures.

Summary: This article examines a major maritime disaster scenario and explores the evacuation process in such a situation. The study finds that there are various factors that affect the number of lives saved, including the uncertainty of individuals' medical condition, the arrival time of maritime and air assets, and the decision policies used. The authors formulate the multi-domain operation as a sequential decision problem using a modeling framework and provide decision support through a hypothetical case study.

Summary: This paper explores the concepts of resilient cities and environmental resilience, developing indicators to assess the environmental resilience of local governments. Results from a questionnaire distributed to local governments in Japan reveal that they are mainly concerned about threats such as earthquakes, population decline, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, with resilience measures including promoting renewable energy and improving disaster-related information provision.

Summary: Groundwater heat pump systems (GWHPs) are an effective solution for reducing carbon emissions in densely urbanised cities, but their impact on the subsurface must consider environmental factors. Attention must be given to the sustainability of groundwater abstraction methods and the development of thermally affected zones. Simplified solutions and numerical models can predict heat transport mechanisms, considering site-specific geological conditions and groundwater flow regimes. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of GWHP research and discusses their benefits and limitations in Italy, emphasizing accurate depiction of induced variations on exploited aquifers.

Summary: Plastics and microplastic pollution pose risks to the environment and human health. This study developed a multi-criteria framework to assess the hazardous properties of common polymer types and found that polyvinyl chloride, poly-propylene, and polystyrene had the highest risk of harm. The study highlights the complexity of microplastics as an emerging contaminant and supports decision-makers in prioritizing management strategies.

Summary: Agent-based models (ABMs) are not widely used by policymakers for simulating the behaviour of agricultural agents in response to land use (LU) policy. LU ABMs mainly rely on pre-defined behavioural rules at the individual farmers' level and prioritize explanatory purposes over predictive purposes. We propose a framework to develop data-driven ABMs for agricultural LU by integrating machine learning (ML) algorithms to learn agents' behavioural rules from data, which can provide novel insights and improve the ability of ABMs to predict policy outcomes at the micro-level.

Summary: GeospatialVR is an open-source collaborative virtual reality framework that can dynamically create 3D real-world environments accessible on multiple platforms in real-time. By integrating geospatial information and virtual reality, it assists various stakeholders in acquiring essential data. Furthermore, with multi-user support, it can function as a virtual incident command center or meeting room.

Summary: This article points out that many of the barriers to progress in addressing environmental problems, such as climate change, are political. The article argues that politics should be seen as a target of intervention to advance environmental solutions, rather than just a constraint. Using the example of climate change, the article illustrates how insight into politics can help policymakers craft strategies to address the ambition gap, the implementation gap, and the international action gap.

Summary: Transitioning to a low carbon energy future is crucial to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The Energy Scenario Evaluation framework presented in this paper emphasizes the need to assess the impact of energy scenarios on society and the natural environment, highlighting the interconnectedness of energy transitions with human development and the importance of designing energy scenarios that align with other policy priorities.

Summary: We have developed a descriptive framework that facilitates the evaluation of policy instruments for low-carbon transition. The framework involves a stock-taking and mapping analysis based on five questions. Four questions allow policy makers to understand the attributes and incentives of existing policy instruments, providing a description of each individual instrument. These attributes are then mapped to identifiers of market failures related to the transition. The fifth question considers the coherence of the policy instrument mix. The framework enables the evaluation of the incentives for firms and households to contribute to the decarbonization of the economy. We applied this framework to the residential and commercial (buildings) sector in Austria, a country with ambitious goals.
