An electrochemical lead volatile species generation system, as a means for sample introduction into a flame atomic absorption spectrometer, has been developed and evaluated for the determination of lead in urine samples. The reaction cell, designed and manufactured in our laboratory, consists of a reaction compartment housing a reticulated glassy carbon cathode and a platinum wire anode. The cell can easily be coupled to the spectrometer via a gas-liquid separator. The characteristic of the cathode material, the volatile species generation efficiency and the possible interferences of some concomitants have been studied. Calculated detection limit based on the variability of a blank solution (3 s(b) criterion) for ten measurements was 11 mu g L-1 and the sensitivity determined from the slope of the calibration graph, was 0.152 L mg(-1). The reproducibility (RSD) for ten replicate measurements at 1.0 mg L-1 lead level, was 1.4%. The accuracy of the method was determined through the analysis of spike urine samples. Recovery of 103.71% +/- 0.05 was achieved.

Summary: This study investigates the use of electrophoretic deposition to produce a TiO2/BDD photoanode for the degradation and mineralization of sodium diclofenac. The results show that the TiO2/BDD photoanode has superior degradation and mineralization capacity under UVC illumination compared to a bare BDD electrode.

Summary: This study evaluated the antioxidant properties and chemical composition of the seeds, pulp and peels of Ungurahua and Pasu fruits native to the Ecuadorian Amazon. The antioxidant capacity was measured using different assays, and the presence of phenolic compounds and bioactive compounds was identified using spectroscopy and chromatography techniques. The results suggested that the peel and seed extracts of Pasu had the highest antioxidant capacity and both fruits were important sources of bioactive compounds.

Summary: In this study, the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using aqueous extract of fine aroma cocoa leaves was optimized through electrochemical techniques. The electrochemical analyzes, including cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, showed consistent results with the spectrophotometric analyzes. The optimized extract with nanoparticles had a higher antioxidant index and a lower electrochemical index compared to the extract without nanoparticles. The obtained nanoparticles had a mean size of 10.3 +/- 1.7 nm and were characterized using various methods.

Summary: In this study, the concentration of Cd(II), Cu(II), and Fe(III) was determined in 13 brands of craft beer in Quito, Ecuador. The DPASV method on BDD was found to have acceptable precision and accuracy for the quantification of these metals. It was discovered that some beers did not comply with the permissible limits of food standards.
