Mineral inclusions may develop residual pressures (P-incl) during cooling and exhumation because of differential expansion and compression relative to the host entrapping mineral. Shifts to Raman spectra, as determined using laser Raman microspectroscopy, permit inference of P-incl. Knowing the pressure-temperature (P-T) dependence of molar volumes from thermodynamic databases and the shear modulus of the host phase, entrapment P at assumed T or entrapment T at assumed P can be calculated for a measured P-incl. This concept is developed theoretically to fit simplified empirical expressions of entrapment P(T, P-incl) or T(P, P-incl) for a wide range of common mineral host-inclusion pairs. Typical residuals are <200 bar for barometers and <5 degrees C for thermometers. Barometric slopes are flat (0-15 bar/degrees C), and even large measurement errors of +/- 0.5 cm(-1) propagate to barometric precisions that are small (c. +/- 300 bar) for quartz inclusions in numerous silicates, apatite, oxides and pyrite, and acceptable for graphite in garnet (+/- 2 kbar) and for garnet, olivine, and coesite in diamond (+/- 3 kbar). Thermometric slopes are steep (40-400 bar/degrees C), but highly resolved measurements (at least +/- 0.1 cm(-1)) are needed for thermometric precisions better than +/- 30 degrees C for zircon and rutile inclusions in numerous silicates and for spinel in olivine. Applications to published data recover peak entrapment P's in some instances, but imply higher or lower P's than originally assumed in others. Disparities may arise from sample preparation, differences in conditions of mineral entrapment vs. final equilibration, or reequilibration of the host mineral via chemical diffusion, viscous flow or fracturing. Polymorphic transitions (e.g. coesite=quartz, diamond=graphite) can preclude recovery of entrapment P's except for very high P's or rapid exhumation. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Insights on the controls on floodplain-dominated fluvial successions: a perspective from the Early-Middle Miocene Santa Cruz Formation in Rio Chalia (Patagonia, Argentina)

Jose Cuitino, M. Sol Raigemborn, M. Susana Bargo, Sergio F. Vizcaino, Nahuel A. Munoz, Matthew J. Kohn, Richard F. Kay

Summary: The Santa Cruz Formation in Patagonia, Argentina, is a well-exposed fluvial succession containing abundant fossil vertebrates accumulated during the Miocene Climatic Optimum. The sedimentation of the floodplain-dominated fluvial system remained constant over a period of 3 myr, influenced by factors such as tectonics, global sea level, climate, and sediment supply. The formation records a Santacrucian fauna with no significant changes throughout the section, indicating a period of relatively stable environmental conditions.

Backarc Lithospheric Thickness and Serpentine Stability Control Slab-Mantle Coupling Depths in Subduction Zones

Buchanan C. Kerswell, Matthew J. Kohn, Taras Gerya

Summary: The depth of coupling between the slab and mantle in subduction zones is influenced by the thermal structure of the backarc and the thermal parameter of the slab. The depth of coupling is strongly correlated with the thickness of the backarc lithosphere and weakly correlated with the slab thermal parameter.

A Melange of Subduction Ages: Constraints on the Timescale of Shear Zone Development and Underplating at the Subduction Interface, Catalina Schist (CA, USA)

K. M. Harvey, S. Walker, P. G. Starr, S. C. Penniston-Dorland, M. J. Kohn, E. F. Baxter

Summary: The study used Sm-Nd garnet geochronology to determine the timing of peak metamorphism in garnet amphibolite tectonic blocks from the melange zone. The ages do not correlate with peak metamorphic temperature, indicating that melange formation lasted at least 8 million years from 116 to 108 Ma. Cooling occurred after melange formation, with a potential underplating event between 109 and 108 Ma.

Summary: This study suggests that the relatively wet hydroclimate conditions in the southern Nevada's Las Vegas Valley during the late Pleistocene were likely driven by winter precipitation. The lower proportion of C4 grasses in the diet of herbivores during this time may be attributed to dietary competition among the diverse and abundant Pleistocene fauna.

Computing Rates and Distributions of Rock Recovery in Subduction Zones

Buchanan C. C. Kerswell, Matthew J. J. Kohn, Taras V. V. Gerya

Summary: Bodies of rock recovered from subducting oceanic plates at Earth's surface provide valuable records of rock processing along subduction interfaces, but comparing the rock record with numerical simulations of subduction reveals inconsistencies. This study uses a classification algorithm to identify rock recovery in numerical simulations and finds correlations between recovery pressures, convergence velocity, and plate age. The results also suggest discrepancies between the recovered markers and the rock record, possibly due to modeling uncertainties or sampling biases.

Shallow sources of upper mantle seismic anisotropy in East Africa

C. J. Ebinger, Miriam C. Reiss, Ian Bastow, Mary M. Karanja

Summary: The East African rift system is formed above mantle upwellings and the formation of rifts is related to lithospheric thinning and magmatic activity. The amount of splitting varies spatially and the fast axes are predominantly parallel to the orientation of the rifts. Thick lithospheric modules have less splitting and different orientations, which may indicate mantle plume flow. Splitting rotates and increases in strength as it enters the rift zones, suggesting that the anisotropy is mainly present at shallow depths.

Concordance of V-in-olivine and Fe-XANES oxybarometry methods in mid-ocean ridge basalts

Robert W. Nicklas, Igor S. Puchtel, Ethan F. Baxter

Summary: Oxygen fugacity is a fundamental parameter for understanding redox processes in igneous systems. This study compares the Fe-XANES oxybarometry method with the V-in-olivine method for evaluating fO(2) in MORB lavas. The results show that the V-in-olivine method is not applicable to samples with low MgO content, and that the majority of Archean komatiite sources have lower fO(2) than modern MORB.

Calcium isotopes track volatile components in the mantle sources of alkaline rocks and associated carbonatites

Chunfei Chen, Stephen F. Foley, Sebastian Tappe, Huange Ren, Lanping Feng, Yongsheng Liu

Summary: The volatile components CO2 and H2O play a major role in mantle melting and heterogeneity. In this study, Ca isotopes were used to trace the lithological heterogeneity in alkaline magmatic rocks. The results revealed the presence of K-richterite and carbonate components as the source of alkaline magmas with low delta 44/40Ca values. These findings highlight the importance of Ca isotopes as a robust tracer of lithological variation caused by volatiles in the Earth's upper mantle.

Cosmogenic (un-)steadiness revealed by paired-nuclide catchment-wide denudation rates in the formerly half-glaciated Vosges Mountains (NE France)

Timothee Jautzy, Gilles Rixhon, Regis Braucher, Romain Delunel, Pierre G. Valla, Laurent Schmitt, Aster Team

Summary: Although the current approach to estimate catchment-wide denudation rates using only 10Be concentrations has made significant progress in geomorphology, this study argues for the inclusion of 26Al measurements and testing of steady-state assumptions in slow eroding, formerly glaciated landscapes. The study conducted measurements of both 10Be and 26Al in stream sediments from the Vosges Massif in France and found that elevation, slope, channel steepness, and precipitation were the primary factors controlling denudation rates. The study also revealed a significant relationship between the extent of past glaciation and the cosmogenic (un-)steadiness in the stream sediments.

Linking rates of slab sinking to long-term lower mantle flow and mixing

Erik van der Wiel, Douwe J. J. van Hinsbergen, Cedric Thieulot, Wim Spakman

Summary: Numerical models of Earth's mantle dynamics can predict the vigour and mixing of mantle flow, and the average slab sinking rates are an unexplored parameter that can provide intrinsic information on these characteristics. Through numerical experiments, it has been found that slab sinking rates are strongly correlated with mantle convection and mixing, and may explain geochemical observations from hotspot volcanoes.
