OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize a population of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in terms of traditional and new cardiovascular risk factors and assess their putative correlation with clinical disease activity (evaluated by the Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS]). METHODS: Thirty relapsing MS patients and 66 subjects, matched by age and sex, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. For each subject, anthropometric data were collected and classical biochemical (including lipid profile, glucose and C reactive protein [CRP] levels) and novel markers (paraoxonase 1 [PON1] enzyme activity and contents of high-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, oxidized low-density lipoprotein [Ox-LDL], tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-alfa, vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF] and adiponectin) were studied. RESULTS: In patients group, 23 women and 7 men were included, aged 35.00 (28.25-40.25) years and scoring a median of 2.00 (1.50-3.13) in EDSS. Comparing with controls, the most relevant differences encountered were: increased serum triglycerides (P < 0.001), Ox-LDL (P < 0.001) as well as Ox-LDL/LDL ratio and reduced small HDL (P = 0.040), accompanied by a trend to increased VEGF concentration. LDL content, especially Ox-LDL, showed positive and significant correlation with EDSS (r = 0.458; P = 0.011) and VEGF (r = 0.453; P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS: MS patients presented a profile of early CV risk, being Ox-LDL contents a putative good marker and having correlation with the clinical activity of the disease.

Summary: This article presents a new model called FITSS (Fibromyalgia: Imbalance of Threat and Soothing Systems), which proposes that an imbalance in emotion regulation, specifically an overactive 'threat' system and underactive 'soothing' system, may contribute to the development of fibromyalgia. This model provides a new perspective for future research and may stimulate the discovery of novel therapeutic interventions.

Nanoclays for wound management applications

Filipa Mascarenhas-Melo, Diana Peixoto, Carolina Aleixo, Maria Beatriz S. Goncalves, Faisal Raza, Kiran D. D. Pawar, Francisco Veiga, Mingxian Liu, Ana Claudia Paiva-Santos

Summary: Nanotechnology is increasingly used to manage wound healing, with nanoclays showing great potential in improving traditional wound healing approaches or new therapies. Nanoclays possess intrinsic properties that promote hemostatic response, anti-inflammatory effects, angiogenesis, and re-epithelization. This review focuses on the use of nanoclays in treating skin lesions, post-surgical wounds, burn wounds, and chronic ulcer skin wounds. Research studies and databases have shown the effectiveness of nanoclays in wound healing, but further in vivo toxicity studies are required.

Summary: Functional MRI (fMRI) with H-1-MRS was used to study the neurometabolic changes in animal models of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Rats on a high-fat diet showed elevated levels of NAAG and GSH in the hippocampus, whereas diabetic rats showed elevated levels of taurine and GABA(A)R in the visual cortex. These findings suggest different mechanisms and responses to metabolic and vascular insults in different brain regions.

Quality of Life Perception among Portuguese Celiac Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the Celiac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ)

Claudia Chaves, Antonio Raposo, Renata Puppin Zandonadi, Eduardo Yoshio Nakano, Fernando Ramos, Edite Teixeira-Lemos

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) perception of Portuguese celiac patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online self-administered celiac disease quality of life questionnaire (CDQ). The results showed that the Portuguese CDQ was reliable and responsive in assessing the QoL of Portuguese celiac patients. Factors such as age at diagnosis, educational level, compliance with a gluten-free diet, and use of antidepressants had an impact on different domains of QoL. This data is essential for developing strategies to improve the physical, emotional, and social well-being of celiac patients, and for future comparative research among celiac populations from different countries.

Summary: Resveratrol is a polyphenolic phytoalexin that is mainly found in red grapes, red wine, berries, and peanuts. When applied topically, resveratrol has good penetration and stability properties, making it suitable for dermatological and cosmetic formulations. It exhibits various beneficial effects on the skin, including anti-aging, photoprotective, estrogen-like, skin-whitening, anti-acne, wound healing, anti-scarring, antimicrobial, and anti-skin cancer properties. However, its stability is compromised when exposed to UV radiation, leading to the development of technological strategies, such as nanotechnology, to enhance its stability and efficacy.
