Fish oil replacement prevents, while docosahexaenoic acid-derived protectin DX mitigates end-stage-renal-disease in atherosclerotic diabetic mice

Lais R. Perazza, Patricia L. Mitchell, Farah Lizotte, Benjamin A. H. Jensen, Philippe St-Pierre, Jocelyn Trottier, Olivier Barbier, Patrick Mathieu, Pedro M. Geraldes, Andre Marette

Cholecalciferol Supplementation Does Not Prevent the Development of Metabolic Syndrome or Enhance the Beneficial Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Obese Mice

Marion Valle, Patricia L. Mitchell, Genevieve Pilon, Philippe St-Pierre, Thibault Varin, Denis Richard, Marie-Claude Vohl, Helene Jacques, Edgar Delvin, Emile Levy, Claudia Gagnon, Laurent Bazinet, Andre Marette

Summary: Supplementation with D-3 did not prevent cardiometabolic diseases or enhance the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids in vitamin D-sufficient obese mice. D-3 supplementation altered the gut microbiota in the omega-3FA groups, but not in the omega-6FA groups.

Blood Levels of the SMOC1 Hepatokine Are Not Causally Linked with Type 2 Diabetes: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study

Nooshin Ghodsian, Eloi Gagnon, Jerome Bourgault, Emilie Gobeil, Hasanga D. Manikpurage, Nicolas Perrot, Arnaud Girard, Patricia L. Mitchell, Benoit J. Arsenault

Summary: Analysis of RNA sequencing data from patients with NAFLD showed no significant differences in SMOC1 expression levels across stages. Mendelian randomization analysis did not find evidence that genetically predicted NAFLD, T2D, and glycemic traits influenced SMOC1 levels.

Raspberry consumption: identification of distinct immune-metabolic response profiles by whole blood transcriptome profiling

Maximilien Franck, Juan de Toro-Martin, Thibault V. Varin, Veronique Garneau, Genevieve Pilon, Denis Roy, Patrick Couture, Charles Couillard, Andre Marette, Marie-Claude Vohl

Summary: Numerous studies have found that diets rich in phenolic compounds are beneficial for immune-metabolic health, but the effects vary among individuals and the mechanisms are not well understood. This study used transcriptomic analysis to identify two subgroups of responders and non-responders to raspberry consumption based on whole-blood RNAseq data. Responders showed a significant decrease in triglycerides, cholesterol, and C-reactive protein levels, and had distinct gene expression and microbiota profiles compared to non-responders. The transcriptomic approach used in this study provides a promising framework for understanding the inter-individual variability in the impact of foods on immune-metabolic health.

Gut Microbial Signatures of Distinct Trimethylamine N-Oxide Response to Raspberry Consumption

Maximilien Franck, Juan De Toro-Martin, Thibault V. Varin, Veronique Garneau, Genevieve Pilon, Denis Roy, Patrick Couture, Charles Couillard, Andre Marette, Marie-Claude Vohl

Summary: This study evaluated the gut microbial signatures of different TMAO responses following raspberry consumption. The results showed that raspberry consumption altered the gut microbial composition, which in turn affected the changes in TMAO levels.

Summary: This study found a potential causal effect of NAFLD on blood tyrosine levels, suggesting it may serve as a new biomarker for NAFLD.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global problem that affects public health, agriculture, and the environment. The mechanism of aerial transport of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria via bioaerosols is not well understood. This ongoing project in Canada aims to assess the presence and fate of AMR in bioaerosols, including the emissions of antibiotic resistance genes, their long-distance transport, and dissemination models. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to understand the role of bioaerosols in the spread of AMR.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of housing conditions on the metabolic outcomes of germ-free (GF) mice after receiving faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). The results reveal that the housing environment strongly influences gut microbiota composition and function, leading to distinctive phenotypes in recipient mice.

Impact of Blueberry Consumption on the Human Fecal Bileacidome: A Pilot Study of Bile Acid Modulation by Freeze-Dried Blueberry

William Gagnon, Veronique Garneau, Jocelyn Trottier, Melanie Verreault, Charles Couillard, Denis Roy, Andre Marette, Jean-Philippe Drouin-Chartier, Marie-Claude Vohl, Olivier Barbier

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of dietary supplementation with blueberry powder on the composition of fecal bile acids (BA). The results showed that the consumption of blueberry powder led to significant increases in glycine-conjugated BAs, glycochenodeoxycholic acid, and glycoursodeoxycholic acid, as well as a significant reduction in secondary BA levels.

Impact of the gut microbiota and associated metabolites on cardiometabolic traits, chronic diseases and human longevity: a Mendelian randomization study

Eloi Gagnon, Patricia L. Mitchell, Hasanga D. Manikpurage, Erik Abner, Nele Taba, Tonu Esko, Nooshin Ghodsian, Sebastien Theriault, Patrick Mathieu, Benoit J. Arsenault

Summary: The study investigated the influence of gut microbiota on cardiometabolic traits, chronic diseases, and human longevity using a comprehensive 2-Sample Mendelian randomization approach. The results suggest that the impact of gut microbiota features on cardiometabolic traits, chronic diseases, or longevity is not significant.

Khera, Tonu Esko, Benoit J. Arsenault

Summary: This study conducted a genome-wide meta-analysis of NAFLD in participants of European ancestry and identified 5 potential susceptibility loci, as well as explored the effects of lower LPL expression in adipose tissue and the FTO genotype on NAFLD. Positive genetic correlations were found between NAFLD and cardiometabolic diseases and risk factors, while negative genetic correlations were observed with parental lifespan and socio-economic status. This GWAS meta-analysis provided insights into the genetic architecture of NAFLD.
