Summary: This study evaluated the long-term outcomes of ranibizumab (RBZ) vs. aflibercept (AFL) in treatment-naive eyes with typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). The results showed no significant difference in visual outcomes and number of injections between the two treatments over the course of 4 years.

Summary: Cervical cancer is a global health problem, with about 30,000 deaths reported in Latin America in 2020. Current treatments for early-stage patients have good outcomes, but there is a need for new therapies to prevent recurrence, progression, and metastasis in advanced stages. In this study, the combination of metformin, sodium oxamate, and doxorubicin showed promising results in inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the mTOR pathway in cervical cancer cells.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical reports of response-loss in patients with neovascular eye diseases, such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME), after repeated anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. The front-line treatment for neovascular AMD and DME is the intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF biologic drugs, but some patients experience disease recurrence and develop acquired resistance to anti-VEGF therapy. This review discusses the changes to angiogenic signaling pathways and ocular endothelial glycolysis following VEGF-targeted treatment, and proposes potential mechanisms underlying the development of acquired resistance to anti-VEGF therapy.

Summary: This study aimed to find baseline predictors for subretinal fibrosis (SF) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Through various imaging techniques and quantitative feature evaluations, low baseline BCVA, intraretinal fluid, and subretinal hyperreflective material were identified as easily identifiable baseline parameters indicating increased risk.

Summary: Radiotherapy and targeted therapy are necessary for HER2-positive breast cancer patients with brain metastases. However, the combination of these treatments needs further investigation, and the neurotoxicity caused by radiotherapy is a significant concern. Achieving the balance between efficacy and toxicity with new techniques and drugs remains uncertain. This review evaluates the benefits and potential risks of combining radiotherapy and targeted therapy for HER2-positive breast cancer with brain metastases.

Summary: The changes in outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness during anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment in type 1 choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and its impact on vision were investigated. The CNV group had thinner foveal ONL and worse best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) compared to the control group. Foveal ONL thickness partially recovered along with visual improvement following initial anti-VEGF treatment.
