Summary: This study investigated the relationship between clinical characteristics and response to anti-reflux treatment in gastroesophageal reflux-induced cough patients. It found that nasal itching, tickle in the throat, and pharyngeal foreign body sensation were associated with a successful response to treatment, while reflux-related symptoms showed no significant difference between responders and non-responders. These findings can help guide the selection of anti-reflux therapy.

Summary: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a syndrome caused by the reflux of gastric contents into the pharynx or larynx, leading to a variety of symptoms. Treatment options for LPR include medical therapies such as proton pump inhibitors and noninvasive treatment options like lifestyle therapy. Due to the complexity of patients with LPR, a treatment algorithm is proposed to assist clinicians in diagnosing and treating patients effectively.

Summary: Chronic cough is a common and poorly understood disease that negatively affects quality of life. Clinicians have been trying to find the underlying diagnosis and using existing disease models to describe it, resulting in a confusing picture of chronic cough. Most patients with chronic cough present with hypersensitivity of the cough reflex, characterized by abnormal throat sensations and an increased response to stimuli that would not trigger coughing in healthy individuals. Recent studies suggest that chronic cough is a unique disease characterized by vagal hypersensitivity and altered central nervous system responsiveness.

Summary: Chronic cough is a prevalent and challenging condition with various underlying causes. It is associated with cough hypersensitivity, characterized by excessive coughing in response to stimuli, resulting in significant impact on patients' quality of life. Advances in understanding the mechanisms of cough hypersensitivity have led to the development of new therapies for chronic cough in adults. Personalized treatment approaches and phenotyping cough patients may hold promise for future management.

Summary: GERD is a prevalent medical condition that can cause chronic cough. The underlying molecular mechanism behind GER-related chronic cough (GERC) is still unclear. Different theories, such as reflux theory, reflex theory, airway allergies, and esophageal motility disorders, are linked to GERC. Multichannel intraluminal impedance combined with pH monitoring is the gold standard for diagnosing GERC, but it is invasive and not well tolerated by patients. Recent discoveries in impedance markers and techniques show promise for the diagnosis of GERD, but further investigation is needed for GERC. Advances in pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments provide more options for managing GERC.

Summary: Chronic cough is a complex condition that can negatively impact quality of life and pose a diagnostic challenge for physicians. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a common contributing factor for chronic cough, but the exact mechanism is unclear. This study investigated the relationship between chronic cough and LPR using objective pH impedance studies and found that LPR may be a prevalent contributing or etiologic factor for chronic cough.

Summary: Bronchial hyperresponsiveness may be considered as a predictor of cough variant asthma in non-smoking adults with chronic cough, showing a high positive predictive value in this population. Cough severity and cough related quality of life were not related to the severity of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in CVA patients.

Summary: Chronic cough, lasting for more than 8 weeks, is a common reason for primary care and specialist consultations in the United States. This article discusses the concept of cough hypersensitivity syndrome (CHS) as a useful tool for diagnosing and treating refractory chronic cough when the underlying cause is unclear. It also emphasizes the importance of evaluating and treating common causes of chronic cough in a systematic multidisciplinary manner, while exploring current and novel therapeutics for CHS.
