Comparison of Traditional and Rest-Redistribution Sets on Indirect Markers of Muscle Damage Following Eccentric Exercise

Justin J. Merrigan, Margaret T. Jones, Jan Malecek, Jan Padecky, Dan Omcirk, Nan Xu, Luis Penailillo, James J. Tufano

Summary: This study examined the effects of rest-redistribution on muscle damage after eccentric exercise. The results showed that rest-redistribution does not strongly influence exercise performance and indications of subsequent muscle damage in eccentric isokinetic resistance training.

Exploring Older Adults' Experiences of a Home-Based, Technology-Driven Balance Training Exercise Program Designed to Reduce Fall Risk: A Qualitative Research Study Within a Randomized Controlled Trial

Meghan Ambrens, Melinda Stanners, Trinidad Valenzuela, Husna Razee, Jessica Chow, Kimberley S. van Schooten, Jaqueline C. T. Close, Lindy Clemson, G. A. Rixt Zijlstra, Stephen R. Lord, Anne Tiedemann, Stephanie J. Alley, Corneel Vandelanotte, Kim Delbaere

Summary: This study found that using digital technologies to deliver a fall prevention program is an effective and enjoyable method. Older adults are interested in learning how to engage successfully with novel technologies, although their experiences may vary. Despite some challenges, most participants were able to overcome difficulties and learn new skills. Understanding older adults' experiences with technology-driven methods is crucial for promoting and sustaining fall prevention programs.

A Short-Term Eccentric HIIT Induced Greater Reduction in Cardio-Metabolic Risk Markers in Comparison With Concentric HIIT in Sedentary Overweight Men

Luis Penailillo, Manuel Diaz-Reiher, Alvaro Gurovich, Marcelo Flores-Opazo

Summary: This study compared the effects of short-term high-intensity interval eccentric training with high-intensity interval concentric training on cardiometabolic risk in sedentary overweight men. The results showed that eccentric training led to improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure, while concentric training did not show significant changes.

Contrast With Compression Therapy Enhances Muscle Function Recovery and Attenuates Glycogen Disruption After Exercise

Vincent M. Colantuono, Ryan Oakley, Disa L. Hatfield, Luis Penailillo, Shabnam Lateef, Jacob E. Earp

Summary: Contrast with compression therapy can enhance muscle recovery, reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, and attenuate disruption of glycogen storage after intense exercise.

Appropriateness of indirect markers of muscle damage following lower limbs eccentric-biased exercises: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Emeric Chalchat, Anne-Fleur Gaston, Keyne Charlot, Luis Penailillo, Omar Valdes, Pierre-Emmanuel Tardo-Dino, Kazunori Nosaka, Vincent Martin, Sebastian Garcia-Vicencio, Julien Siracusa

Summary: This review aimed to characterize the time-course of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) markers based on the level of maximal voluntary contraction torque loss at 24-48h post-exercise (MVCloss24-48h), identify factors affecting MVCloss24-48h, and evaluate the appropriateness of EIMD markers as indicators of MVCloss24-48h. The findings suggest that different markers should be used at different time points based on the severity of EIMD, and training status and exercise type/modality can influence MVCloss24-48h. This study provides important insights into the understanding, monitoring, and assessment of muscle damage.

Effects of eccentric, concentric and eccentric/concentric training on muscle function and mass, functional performance, cardiometabolic health, quality of life and molecular adaptations of skeletal muscle in COPD patients: a multicentre randomised trial

Luis Penailillo, Denisse Valladares-Ide, Sebastian Jannas-Velas, Marcelo Flores-Opazo, Mauricio Jalon, Laura Mendoza, Ingrid Nunez, Orlando Diaz-Patino

Summary: This study aims to compare the effects of eccentric, concentric, and combined eccentric/concentric cycling training on severe COPD patients and examine the molecular adaptations regulating muscle growth after training. The combination of eccentric and concentric exercise is expected to maximize the improvements in clinical outcomes for COPD patients, and this study hopes to unravel the molecular mechanisms underpinning muscle mass regulation in severe COPD patients after training.

Is the Rotatory Knee Stability Immediately Decreased Following a Competitive Soccer Match?

Alejandro Neira, Rony Silvestre, Anibal Debandi, Daniel Darras, Iver Cristi-Sanchez, Ignacio Barra, Luis Penailillo, Carlos De La Fuente

Summary: Fatigue induced by soccer playing can decrease rotatory knee stability, increasing the risk of knee injuries. This study aimed to determine the immediate effects of a competitive soccer match on rotatory knee stability in amateur players and investigate the influence of preferred and non-preferred limbs on knee stability. The results showed that rotatory knee stability decreased after a soccer match, with increased acceleration and jerk during the pivot shift maneuver.

Changes in Blood Markers of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Patients with COPD after Eccentric and Concentric Cycling Training

Mayalen Valero-Breton, Denisse Valladares-Ide, Cristian Alvarez, Reyna S. Penailillo, Luis Penailillo

Summary: This study examined the effects of 12-week eccentric and concentric cycling training on cardiometabolic health, oxidative stress, and inflammation in COPD patients. The results showed that concentric training improved antioxidant levels, reduced oxidative stress, and increased insulin sensitivity, which could improve the health status of COPD patients.

The Role of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Their Lipid Mediators on Skeletal Muscle Regeneration: A Narrative Review

Sebastian Jannas-Vela, Alejandra Espinosa, Alejandro A. A. Candia, Marcelo Flores-Opazo, Luis Penailillo, Rodrigo Valenzuela

Summary: Skeletal muscle, accounting for about 40% of body mass, has the potential to fully regenerate after damage or injury. However, aging and chronic diseases hinder the regeneration process, leading to fibrotic tissue formation, infiltration of intermuscular adipose tissue, and loss of muscle mass and strength. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their derivatives have been found to enhance muscle regeneration by modulating the inflammatory response. This review focuses on the potential role of n-3 PUFAs in positively influencing skeletal muscle healing and regeneration.

Eccentric Cycling Is an Alternative to Nordic Hamstring Exercise to Increase the Neuromuscular Function of Knee Flexors in Untrained Men

Omar Valdes, Sixto Inzulza, Nicolas Collao, Sebastian Garcia-Vicencio, James J. Tufano, Jacob Earp, Mauricio Venegas, Luis Penailillo

Summary: This study compared the effects of Nordic hamstring training (NHT) and eccentric cycling (ECC) training on the neuromuscular function of knee flexors. The results showed that both training modalities produced similar adaptations, suggesting that ECC could serve as an alternative form of knee flexor training for those unable to perform NHT.

Rate of torque development as an indirect marker of muscle damage in the knee flexors

Clarissa Muller Brusco, Regis Radaelli, Rodrigo Neske, Luis E. Penailillo, Ronei S. Pinto

Summary: This study examined the changes in rate of torque development (RTD) as an indirect marker of muscle damage after a knee flexion exercise-induced muscle damage protocol. The results showed that RTD at different intervals were changed after the eccentric exercise protocol, suggesting RTD can be used as an indirect marker of muscle damage.
