Summary: This study found that chlorogenic acid (CGA) can provide neuroprotection in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) by inhibiting the expression of EMMPRIN and MMP-2/9, alleviating neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, cell death, and brain injury.

Summary: This review explores the role of EMMPRIN in stroke and its pathological mechanisms. It discusses the regulation of matrix metalloproteinase expression, exacerbation of blood-brain barrier dysfunction and microvascular thrombosis, and promotion of neuroinflammation. Additionally, it summarizes various stroke treatments targeting the EMMPRIN signaling pathway, and suggests the potential of EMMPRIN as a biomarker of stroke injury.

Summary: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a disease caused by cerebrovascular damage, leading to hematoma enlargement, brain edema, and physical injury in the brain parenchyma. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of endopeptidases that can degrade components of the extracellular matrix and promote neuroinflammation. After ICH, several MMPs are upregulated and may have different functions at different stages. The glycoprotein extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN, CD147) induces the production of MMPs. The interactions between MMPs and EMMPRIN/CD147 in ICH are complex.

Summary: In this study on adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), the expression of MMP-9 in pseudocysts and peritumoural inflammatory cells was found to be associated with better survival and fewer treatment failures. High tumoural MMP-7 and-25 were linked to better survival, while high tumoural MMP-15 was associated with poorer survival and high tumoural MMP-9 with advanced stage and regional recurrences. Tumour cells did not show MMP-8 immunopositivity. These results suggest potential roles for MMPs in ACC carcinogenesis and prognosis.

Summary: This study demonstrates that EMMPRIN and MMP-14 are upregulated in diabetic retinopathy (DR), with plasma levels positively correlated with other proteins (MMP-9 and VEGF). Experimental evidence shows that EMMPRIN promotes endothelial cell apoptosis and angiogenesis in DR through MMP-14, suggesting a potential role for plasma EMMPRIN and MMP-14 in predicting short-term prognosis of DR.

Summary: MMPs have a complex role in liver fibrosis, with high expression in the early stage causing tissue damage and promoting fibrosis progression, and downregulation in the later stage facilitating ECM accumulation and disease progression. Phytochemicals can modulate MMP activity and ECM turnover, alleviating disease progression, but their effects depend on disease models, stages, and the dosage, timing, and duration of phytochemicals used.

Summary: Liver fibrosis is a consequence of chronic liver injuries, characterized by the imbalance of extracellular matrix production and degradation. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are crucial in collagen synthesis and lysis. This article reviews experimental studies on liver fibrosis based on MMPs/TIMPs and highlights the potential of targeting this interaction as a therapeutic strategy for hepatic fibrosis. The article also summarizes drugs, including natural products, that have been found to reduce liver fibrosis by altering the ratio of MMPs/TIMPs.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) play significant roles in solid tumor invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis, while their role in hematological malignancies is less understood. Recent studies have shown correlations between gelatinases and hematological malignancies, leading to the development of potential inhibitors for these conditions.
