Summary: Visible-light-mediated heterogeneous photocatalysis is a promising method for organic transformations. However, accurately detecting and identifying photogenerated species, especially short-lived radical intermediates, remains challenging. In this work, a hybrid ion emitter integrated with a pico-liter heterogeneous photocatalytic reactor was developed for the rapid identification of transient radical intermediates produced under visible-light irradiation. This novel coupling device provides a powerful tool for exploring complex heterogeneous photochemical processes and their ultrafast initial transformations.

Summary: A tetranuclear Mn(II,III,III,II) diamond core complex has been synthesized using a suitable septadentate ligand framework, and it exhibits excellent catalytic oxidation reactivity for model substrates, mimicking the enzymes catechol oxidase and phenoxazinone synthase. Remarkably, this complex can utilize aerial oxygen to catalyze the oxidation reactions of the model substrates. This tetranuclear Mn-diamond core complex could be a promising multi-enzymatic functional mimic.

Summary: Desymmetrization is a crucial technique for synthesizing chiral compounds, especially chiral biaryls. This study presents an enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral biaryls through desymmetrization using chiral palladium phosphate as the catalyst for C(sp(3))-H activation. Mechanistic investigations reveal that C-H activation plays a crucial role in determining the rate and enantiomeric selectivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the asymmetric desymmetrization of axially chiral compounds via C(sp(3))-H activation.

Summary: In this study, sulfide-modified metal silicates (S-CoSi) were synthesized and applied in the PI-AOPs system to improve the catalytic performance. The sulfurization in metal silicate increased the specific surface area and charge transfer efficiency, enhancing the degradation performance. Experimental and calculation results showed that Co was the active site in S-CoSi, and sulfur species assisted in Co (II) regeneration and promoted the generation of 1O2.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of chiral monoprotected aminoethyl amine (MPAAM) ligands on enantioselective Pd-catalyzed arylation of strong cyclopropane C(sp(3))-H bonds. The results revealed a subtle impact of ligand structure on reaction kinetics and mechanism, as well as a negative dependence of ligand concentration on reaction rate. These findings demonstrate the importance of ligand design in catalytic reactions.

Summary: Chemoselective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones has been achieved using metal-based tungstates as catalysts, tolerating a broad range of functional groups. α-Ag2WO4 and NiWO4 were identified as the most efficient and selective catalysts, completing the transformation in 1 and 2 hours, respectively. The success of the selective oxidation is attributed to hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen as redox mediators.

Summary: Historically, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ocean has been attributed to photochemical and biochemical reactions. However, hydrothermal vents emit globally significant inventories of reduced Fe and S species that react rapidly with oxygen in bottom water, serving as a previously unmeasured source of ROS. The Fe-catalyzed oxidation of reduced sulfur species in hydrothermal vent plumes in the deep oceans supports the abiotic formation of ROS at concentrations 20 to 100 times higher than those in surface waters. This plume-generated ROS can alter refractory organic molecules in seawater and potentially affect global ocean carbon inventories.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis of TiO2/CdS nanocomposites with different concentrations of precursors and their characterization using various techniques. The results show that TiO2/CdS nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance in the visible range compared to pure TiO2, and they have better degradation efficiency for methylene blue dye compared to rhodamine B dye. The optimum photocatalytic performance is achieved with a 1:1 M ratio of cadmium and sulphur precursors.

Summary: In this study, two porous polyoxometalate-pillared metal-organic frameworks were designed and utilized as heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of sulfides into high-value sulfoxides. Structural analysis revealed that one of the frameworks exhibited higher activity, which could be attributed to its larger channels that provide more active sites and facilitate more efficient mass transfer processes.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that metal-sulfur coordination compounds can regulate reactive sulfur species (RSS) transport. The reaction of B-Ph-((t)BuIm)(3)NiCl with RSS leads to the formation of square planar complexes through protonation of a carbene ligand donor atom. Mechanistic investigation suggest that protonation may occur from the decomposition of reactants, interactions with favorable counterions, or generation of transient unidentified RSS.

Summary: The ring-opening addition reaction of activated vinyl cyclopropanes with N-tosylhydrazones in the presence of palladium(0) and triphenylphosphine yields N-tosylhydrazone butenylmalonate compounds. Aromatic aldehyde-derived N-tosylhydrazones produce both terminal and internal N-allylated products, with the terminal products being the major ones. On the other hand, ketone-derived tosylhydrazones only yield terminal addition products. The transformation relationship between the terminal and internal N-allylated products is also observed. A reasonable mechanism based on preliminary experimental results is proposed.

Summary: A white light/NIS-promoted three component reaction was developed for the synthesis of organylselenylethyl sulfonylhydrazones using alkenes, N-sulfonylhydrazones, and diorganyl diselenides. The reaction was carried out under mild conditions and showed good tolerance towards common functional groups. Heteroaryl and aliphatic diselenides were also suitable substrates, and the reaction could be performed on a gram scale. The reaction exhibited a wide substrate scope, providing moderate to high yields and excellent regioselectivities. UV-visible absorption spectra confirmed the formation of photoactive intermediates, which matched the wavelength of the applied white LED. A plausible mechanism was proposed based on UV-visible light experiments and control experiments.

Summary: A copper chloride-catalyzed three-component reaction of olefins, indoles, and diaryl diselenides under irradiation of blue LED light is presented. Various diaryl diselenides, including diheteroaryl diselenides, are suitable for this bifunctionalization of olefins. The reaction provides 26 examples of β-(hetero)arylselenyl indoles in 60%-87% yields, and the proposed mechanism involves the activation of diaryl diselenides, electrophilic addition of arylselenium cations to styrenes, and Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation at the 3-position of NH-indoles.
