Summary: The study presented the synthesis and luminescent features of three gold(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes to investigate the influence of the n-alkyl group on luminescence properties in the crystalline state. The results showed that the n-alkyl group can lead to emission shifts in the solid-state luminescence spectra.

Summary: The use of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands instead of phosphine ligands in gold clusters can lead to ligand-specific photophysical properties, with intramolecular C-H···Au interactions as a key structural feature. NHC ligands produce clusters with nearly identical metal kernels but significantly different luminescent properties compared to phosphine ligands. Extension of the pi-conjugated system of NHCs can result in significant changes in absorption coefficient and emission wavelength.

Summary: N-heterocyclic carbene gold(I) chloride and hydroxide complexes are commonly used as synthetic reagents and efficient catalysts. This study describes a straightforward and practical method for synthesizing mononuclear gold complexes with high yields, as well as the synthesis of a mononuclear gold(I) hydroxide complex and an improved synthesis method for a dinuclear gold(I) hydroxide complex. This methodology offers advantages such as the use of sustainable reaction solvents and commercially available starting materials.

Summary: Solid supported or ligand capped gold nanomaterials (AuNMs) have emerged as versatile and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for a broad variety of conversions in the ongoing catalytic 'gold rush'. AuNMs, existing at the border of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have the potential to merge high catalytic activity with significant substrate selectivity. This work summarizes well-defined catalytically active NHC capped AuNMs, including spherical nanoparticles and atom-precise nanoclusters, as well as the important NHC design choices towards activity and (stereo-)selectivity enhancements.

Summary: This study investigated the aromatic properties of gold benzimidazole and cycloheptaimidazole N-heterocyclic carbenes through computational calculations, revealing a minor difference between the two families with family 1 being slightly more aromatic. The high stability of the gold atom's molecular orbitals in the complexes resulted in almost no contribution from the metal to the observed UV-Vis transitions.

Summary: The steric and electronic properties of N-heterocyclic carbenes can be modified by using nido-C2B9 carborane anions as backbones, leading to the formation of N-heterocyclic carbene precursors and ligands, which can further form Au(I) NHC complexes. DFT calculations reveal the strong sigma-donating abilities of the carbene ligands.

Summary: A variety of unsymmetric diaryl gold N-acyclic carbene (NAC) complexes were successfully synthesized by three different methods, allowing access to new complexes and overcoming previous limitations in the isonitrile route. These new complexes also proved to be successful as pre-catalysts in gold-catalyzed phenol synthesis.

Summary: A new flex-activated mechanophore has been discovered, which releases an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) under mechanical load. This design demonstrates a promising first step towards flex-activated designs with downstream reactivities, allowing for iterative activation increases in the material through non-destructive compression cycles. The potential modularity of the mechanophore design is highlighted by the demonstration of two different NHC structures.

Summary: A Brønsted basicity scale was established for nine representative N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) using an UV-visible spectroscopic method. The unsaturated NHOs were found to have stronger basicities compared to their N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues, while the basicities of the saturated NHOs were weaker. The nucleophilicity of the NHOs was also stronger than commonly used Lewis bases but weaker than their NHC analogues.

Summary: A series of mononuclear and binuclear two coordinate Au(I) complexes with MAC carbene ligand and aryl ligand exhibit phosphorescent emission. Among them, the 1-naphthyl derivative shows a high photoluminescence efficiency and long decay lifetime. The complex with anthryl ligand displays thermally activated delayed fluorescence attributed to ISC between the S1 and T2 states, along with locally excited phosphorescence from the T1 state of the anthryl ligand.

Summary: Understanding how host metal(loid)s regulate immune response is crucial for understanding the mechanism of infectious diseases. This study established a metal-coding system to analyze the links between metallome and COVID-19 pathogenesis and immunity. COVID-19 patients showed distinct metallome features compared to non-infected individuals, which could serve as biomarkers for disease diagnosis. Selenium was found to be strongly associated with interleukin-10 (IL-10), and selenium supplementation enhanced IL-10 expression in B cells while reducing proinflammatory cytokines in B and CD4+ T cells. Additionally, selenium supplementation alleviated lung damage in SARS-CoV-2-infected mice.
