Summary: Equipping DNA with hydrophobic anchors enables targeted interaction with lipid bilayers for various applications. Through experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, the study reveals the complex structure and energetics of hydrophobically tagged DNA within lipid membranes. Fundamental insight gained on DNA-bilayer interactions will guide the rational design of membrane-targeting nanostructures.

Summary: This study discusses the synthesis of monoprotected diamines derived from 1,5-disubstituted spiro[2.3]hexane and 5-azaspiro[2.3]hexane scaffolds. The obtained building blocks are potential piperidine/cycloalkane isosteres with promising utility in drug discovery. The two different diastereomers of 1,5-diaminospiro[2.3]hexane derivatives exhibit conformational features suitable for the design of beta-turn and sheet-like peptidomimetics.

Summary: The double helicene with a spiro-Si linker exhibits unique optical properties due to the LUMO spiro-conjugation between the two sila[7]helicene units. The two helicene units in the compound are symmetrically and nearly perpendicularly arranged, thanks to the central spirosilabi[fluorene] moiety.

Summary: Hydrophobic and chemically resistant nanofiltration (NF) polymeric membranes were fabricated with the incorporation of 2D siloxene into PVDF, achieving improved performance compared to commercial NF membranes. These membranes expand the potential applications of nanofiltration to processes requiring stable, chemically resistant, and hydrophobic characteristics.

Summary: The calixarene derivative tetra-p-guanidinoethylcalix[4]arene exhibited in vitro activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The study investigated the interaction between bacterial cell membranes and the water-soluble calixarene using model lipids as monomolecular films. The structure of phosphatidylglycerols influenced the affinity of the calixarene for the monolayer, suggesting potential for developing new antibiotics.

Summary: Biological symmetry breaking is crucial for human survival and relies on chemical physics concepts at both microscopic and macroscopic scales. This study presents various mechanisms of signaling phenomena in human tissues and demonstrates how anatomical asymmetry in membrane structure generates extracellular fluid flow. Membrane asymmetry, resulting from imbalances in aqueous composition and protein trans-membrane interactions, leads to considerable electrostatic voltages in biological membranes. Modelling DPPC, DMPC, and DLPC lipid bilayers with charge misbalances, the study shows that asymmetric membranes create voltage differences across different aqueous tissues. Furthermore, asymmetrical phospholipid bilayers result in quantum effects in small parts of the cell's thickness.

Summary: Researchers solved the problems of susceptibility to chlorine degradation and low permeance in current polyamide lithium extraction nanofiltration membranes by designing a new quaternized-spiro piperazine monomer and translating its beneficial properties into large-area membranes. The new membranes have high permeance and chlorine resistance, and their performance is stable even after 400 hours of immersion in sodium hypochlorite. The high performance is attributed to the spiral conformation and secondary amine structures of the monomer.

Summary: Cells maintain an optimal composition of lipids in their membranes through homeostatic mechanisms. Researchers have used advanced techniques to study lipid membranes and found that the rotational dynamics of choline headgroups remain relatively unchanged with the incorporation of cholesterol, unlike other phospholipid segments. This suggests a new paradigm in which phospholipid dipole headgroups interact independently at the membrane interface.

Summary: Enantioenriched spiro-oxiranes with three contiguous stereocenters were synthesized using a rhodium-catalyzed cascade reaction, enabling the formation of a spirocyclic framework in a single step. Both sp(2)- and sp-hybridized carbon nucleophiles were found to be efficient initiators, yielding products with different functional groups. Derivatization studies demonstrated the synthetic versatility of the products' epoxide and alkyne moieties. DFT calculations were employed to explain spectroscopic discrepancies between solution- and solid-state structures of the products.

Summary: This article reports on the molecular analysis of recently discovered KCRs and the identification of a novel type of hydrophobic K+ selectivity filter. Among these, WiChR from Wobblia lunata features a highly selective KCR signature motif, stable photocurrents, and prolonged open-state lifetime, making it suitable for low irradiance and reduced tissue heating single- and two-photon inhibition in cardiac myocytes and neurons.
