Summary: Great improvements have been made in palladium-catalyzed radical reactions in recent years, offering more effective strategies for constructing complex heterocyclic compounds and applications in drug discovery. Reactions mediated by Pd(0)/(II)/(IV) typically undergo two-electron transfer processes, while those involving Pd(I) and Pd(III) usually occur via single electron transfer processes. Numerous methodologies involving palladium radical have emerged in the past five years since the publication of the review.

Summary: The Catellani reaction, discovered by Catellani in 1997 and further developed by Catellani, Lautens, and others, is a powerful strategy for the synthesis of polysubstituted arenes. This method allows for the simultaneous functionalization of both ortho- and ipso-positions of aryl halides with different electrophiles and terminating agents under the cooperative catalysis of palladium and norbornene. The review focuses on the significant progress in such transformations and categorizes typical Catellani reactions into five parts based on the functionalization modes of ortho-C-H bonds: alkylation, arylation, amination, acylation, or thiolation.

Summary: This study presents the palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of cyclobutanone-derived N-sulfonylhydrazones with aryl or benzyl halides, demonstrating that the metal carbene process and beta-hydride elimination can occur smoothly in strained ring systems to yield structurally diverse products. The preliminary success in asymmetric carbene coupling reactions in strained ring systems offers a promising route for the synthesis of enantioenriched four-membered-ring molecules.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new method of transforming C-H bonds into C-Zn bonds using a palladium catalyst and zinc hydride reagent, which has been successfully applied to various types of arenes with high selectivity. Mechanistic studies show that heterometallic complexes play a crucial role in the catalytic process.

Summary: This study achieved the electrochemical three-component assembly of isoquinolines using ruthenium electro-catalyzed C-H/N-H functionalization, demonstrating a robust electrocatalysis with ample substrate scope, efficient electrooxidation, and an operationally friendly procedure. Furthermore, detailed mechanistic studies and unprecedented cyclovoltammetric analysis of a seven-membered ruthenacycle supported an unusual ruthenium(II/III/I) regime.

Summary: A series of strong it-acceptor polyfluorinated and dicationic chelating phosphines were synthesized and evaluated in the Rh-catalysed dimerization of norbornadiene, leading to the selective formation of specific products and site-selective arylation reactions. Theoretical calculations were performed to understand the origin of the observed regioselectivity.

Summary: The study reports a challenging palladium-catalyzed remote C4-H phosphonylation of indoles using a radical approach. The method not only provides a new synthetic pathway, but also unexpectedly obtained C6-phosphonylated indoles, suggesting a potential strategy for future cross-coupling reactions.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of a formal terminal nitride complex of palladium was reported, and it was characterized through photocrystallography, magnetism, and computational methods. Based on this complex, a photocatalytic protocol for aldehyde C-H trimethylsilylamidation was developed, which exhibited inverted nucleophilic selectivity. This first example of catalytic C-H nitrogen atom transfer has significant implications for obtaining primary amides.

Summary: This article presents a method for obtaining a versatile chiral biaryl structure through C-H halogenation reactions using high-valent Pd catalysis and chiral transient directing groups. The method is scalable, moisture and air insensitive, and in some cases, requires low Pd-loadings of only 1 mol%. Chiral mono-brominated, dibrominated, and bromochloro biaryls can be prepared in high yield and excellent stereoselectivity, serving as building blocks for various reactions with orthogonal synthetic handles.

Summary: This article presents the challenge of regiospecific and atom economic C-C bond formation, which has been addressed by directing group and organometal-based C-H activation strategy. Organometals like Ru, Pd, Pt, Ni have been discovered as effective catalysts for C-H activation without the need for pre-activation of the inert C-H bond. This study focuses on cationic ruthenium and its unique reactivity with inert substrates.

Summary: In this study, an efficient protocol for the assembly of the pharmaceutically and biologically valuable oxazole skeleton from simple arenes and functionalized aliphatic nitriles was achieved for the first time. The reaction proceeds efficiently under redox-neutral conditions with high atom-economy, suggesting that C-H bond cleavage of the simple arenes might be the rate-determining step.

Summary: An enantioselective consecutive cyclization/coupling process catalyzed by palladium was reported in this study. The stereoinduction was achieved through an enantioselective carbopalladation, leading to the generation of an intermediate that promotes a nucleopalladation step. This dual cyclization sequence was compatible with various nucleophiles and aryl iodides, producing numerous bisheterocycles in good yields and high regio- and enantioselectivities.
