A rigorous model supported by botanical investigations has been developed to predict percolation results. Botanical investigations provide needed modeling parameters like pore size, porosity, or target compound distributions over the particle. After determining the desorption isotherm with maceration experiments at different solvent-feed ratios, the model is validated with short residence time percolation experiments. With the aid of this validated model, percolation experiments with long residence times can be predicted and different process scenarios calculated. A combination of design of experiments and rigorous modeling together with standard equipment and experimental model parameter determination provides a fast and robust experimental design on the one hand and the precondition for a process parameter data-based learning curve on the basis of rigorous modeling in the mid- or long-term on the other hand.

Varying the sustained release of BMP-2 from chitosan nanogel-functionalized polycaprolactone fiber mats by different polycaprolactone surface modifications

Summary: Different surface modifications of PCL fiber mats influence the binding and release of BMP-2, with polydopamine coating showing the highest binding capacity. Functionalization with chitosan nanogel considerably increases BMP-2 binding on all hydrophilized surfaces and results in sustained release without loss of bioactivity.

Bacterial assemblages imply methylmercury production at the rice-soil system

Pan Guo, Heinz Rennenberg, Hongxia Du, Tao Wang, Lan Gao, Emmanouil Flemetakis, Robert Hansch, Ming Ma, Dingyong Wang

Summary: The plant microbiota in paddy soil can influence plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, the effect of rice rhizosphere assemblages on MeHg production remains unclear. This study used network analyses of microbial diversity to investigate the bacterial networks in bulk soil, rhizosphere, and roots during rice development at different Hg gradients. The results showed that Hg gradients significantly affected the niche-sharing of taxa related to MeHg/THg, while plant development had minimal effect. The complexity and connectivity of root microbial networks increased with an Hg concentration of 30 mg kg-1 in the soil.
