Summary: The market demand for marine-based cosmetics has experienced significant growth in the past decade. Marine resources offer a promising source for the development of novel cosmetic ingredients. However, sustainability is a concern that needs to be addressed in this development. The fisheries industry generates valuable leftover substances that can be extracted to create bioactive ingredients for cosmetics, such as collagen and chitin, which can provide anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, skin barrier, and hair care benefits. This review aims to explore the potential of these marine by-products as active ingredients for cosmetics, as well as discuss the prospect and challenges of sustainable blue cosmetics.

Summary: The beta-cyclodextrin polymer cross-linked with pyromellitic dianhydride and functionalized with an amino group was successfully introduced into a sodium alginate matrix. SEM images showed a homogeneous surface of the composite material. FTIR testing confirmed the formation of the polymer. The tested polymer exhibited increased solubility compared to the polymer without the amino group. TGA confirmed the stability of the system, and DSC showed the chemical binding of the polymer and sodium alginate. GPC-SEC demonstrated high cross-linking and accurate determination of the polymer's weight. The formation of this composite material has potential environmental implications, including the use of sustainable materials, reduced waste generation, reduced toxicity, and improved solubility.

Summary: Flawless skin is desired by people universally, as it indicates a person's health and affects their emotional and psychological behavior. This has led to the growth of the cosmetics industry, especially with the development of nanotechnology-based formulations. Nanocarriers have addressed issues related to the solubility, stability, and release of active ingredients. However, they also come with challenges such as high cost, short shelf life, and toxicity. Regulation and legislation regarding the use of nanotechnology in cosmetics are controversial, with the FDA taking the lead in the US. The lack of a global definition for nanomaterials as cosmetic ingredients hinders the development of global legislation.

Summary: An inclusion complex based on beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD)/essential oils (EOs) was prepared and deposited on cellulose-based fabric. The inclusion complex enhanced the scent stability of the oils without affecting the tensile strength or permeability of cotton. The treated fabric showed antibacterial activity and could control the growth of bacteria even after multiple wash cycles. This study confirmed the potential of the inclusion-complex-deposited cotton fabric for medical and hospital use.

Summary: In this study, the global formation constants of two inclusion complexes formed by quercetin (QH5) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD) were calculated using SQUAD. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on these complexes was also investigated. The results showed the formation of 1:1 and 1:2 molar ratio inclusion complexes with log beta values of 2.06 +/- 0.22 and 3.69 +/- 0.13 M-1, respectively. The presence of beta CD increased the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of SDS, indicating the formation of an inclusion complex beta CD-SDS. The fluorescence results suggested the breakdown of the Q-beta CD complex due to interaction with SDS.

Summary: Film-forming systems play a crucial role in the topical delivery of active ingredients. Utilizing nanoformulation techniques can help achieve homogenous distribution of hydrophobic molecules, such as PHE, in composite solid film matrices. Confocal Raman imaging coupled with NCLS analysis proves to be a valuable tool for investigating the spatial distribution of ingredients in dried films.

Summary: Liver disease is a major cause of global mortality, and identifying biomarkers for diagnosing its progression is crucial for improving outcomes. Targeted mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for verifying biomarker candidates and clinical applications, particularly for glycoproteins translation. However, the limitation of analyzing only one sample per run has become apparent. In this study, a high-throughput intact N-glycopeptides quantification strategy was developed, allowing the validation of 20 samples per run with an average analysis time of 3 minutes per sample. The strategy was applied in a cohort of 461 serum samples and identified a panel of 10 IgG N-glycopeptides that have strong clinical utility in evaluating the severity of liver disease.

Summary: The study investigates the bioconversion of chitosan into soluble anti-inflammatory chitosan oligosaccharides (CHOS) using an enzyme. The results show that the generated CHOS have anti-inflammatory activity, but the magnitude of the activity depends on the substrate and production process. Different methods of dissolving chitosan also affect the properties of CHOS. The study highlights the importance of quality assurance in CHOS preparations.
