Missing facial parts computed by a morphable model and transferred directly to a polyamide laser-sintered prosthesis: an innovation study

Mirroring of missing facial parts and rapid prototyping of templates have become widely used in the manufacture of prostheses. However, mirroring is not applicable for central facial defects, and the manufacture of a template still requires labour-intensive transformation into the final facial prosthesis. We have explored innovative techniques to meet these remaining challenges. We used a morphable model of a face for the reconstruction of missing facial parts that did not have mirror images, and skin-coloured polyamide laser sintering for direct manufacture of the prosthesis. From the knowledge gleaned from a data set of 200 coloured, three-dimensional scans, we generated a missing nose that was statistically compatible with the remaining parts of the patient's face. The planned prosthesis was manufactured directly from biocompatible skin-coloured polyamide powder by selective laser sintering, and the prosthesis planning system produced a normal-looking reconstruction. The polyamide will need adjustable colouring, and we must be able to combine it with a self-curing resin to fulfil the requirements of realistic permanent use. Cold Ablation Robot-Guided Laser Osteotome (CARLO(R)): From Bench to Bedside

Summary: The CARLO(R) device performed linear osteotomies accurately and safely, with no complications in postoperative healing seen in the patient. However, further improvements are needed in the technical workflow, particularly in target marker positioning and depth control. More research is necessary to assess safety and accuracy, especially in osteotomy sites where direct visual control is not possible.

Histologic Aspect of the Curved Vomerine Mucosa in Cleft Lip and Palate

Summary: The histological examination of curved vomerine mucosa in cleft lip and palate patients revealed characteristics consistent with oral mucosa or squamous metaplasia of nasal mucosa, but no specific signs of nasal mucosa were identified. These findings are important for preoperative and palatal surgery in cleft repair.

Continuous circular closure in unilateral cleft lip and plate repair in one surgery

Summary: This study aims to assess wound healing and safety of single-stage two-layers continuous closure in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The results show that all patients achieved full primary healing without fistulas, and no severe intra- or postoperative adverse events occurred. Furthermore, the width of the cleft decreased significantly after surgery.

Reducing residual-motion artifacts in iterative 3D CBCT reconstruction in image-guided radiation therapy

Craniofacial Growth at Age 6-11 Years after One-Stage Cleft Lip and Palate Repair: A Retrospective Comparative Study with Historical Controls

Summary: Primary alveolar bone grafting during one-stage cleft lip and palate repair does not positively affect growth in children aged 6-11 years. Two-flap palatoplasty has greater adverse effects on growth compared to primary alveolar bone grafting. Dental and palatal morphology are significantly compromised regardless of primary alveolar bone grafting.

A Point-of-Care Digital Workflow for 3D Printed Passive Presurgical Orthopedic Plates in Cleft Care

Summary: This article presents a digital workflow for fabricating personalized presurgical plates in cleft treatment. The digital workflow offers some advantages over the conventional workflow but has a longer throughput time. However, once procurement costs are addressed, digital impressions and point-of-care 3D printing have the potential to become standard for cleft care.
