Summary: Sodium ferulate (SF) is an effective component in Angelica sinensis and Lignsticum chuanxiong, and it plays a role in protecting the cardiovascular system. This study shows that SF can inhibit myocardial hypertrophy in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes induced by angiotensin II. The inhibition is concentration-dependent and involves the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase/NO/cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway, as well as the inhibition of protein kinase C and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways.

Summary: Inducing overweight in rats through a high-fat diet resulted in elevated systolic blood pressure, which was restored to normal levels by oral administration of a specific renin-angiotensin-derived peptide. This treatment also normalized plasma Na+ concentration and decreased Na+ ingestion, while maintaining urinary excretion of Na+. The normalization of renal angiotensin II receptors and Na+-transporting ATPases in overweight rats played a key role in counterregulating high blood pressure and restoring Na+ homeostasis.

Summary: This study investigates the pivotal role of Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) in the activation of DNA damage repair in lung cancer cells after x-rays exposure. The study shows that NRF2 knockdown disrupts damaged DNA repair and homologous recombination, and NRF2 activation mediates DNA damage response via the MAPK pathway. These findings suggest that NRF2 plays a critical role in the development of radioresistance, which is of great significance for the development of radiotherapies.

Summary: Patients with kidney disease often have associated mineral bone disorder and hypertension. In this study, we found that indoxyl sulfate negatively affects the cardiac and renal development of zebrafish embryos, leading to decreased survival rates, cardiac edema, increased mortality, and shortened body length. This is mediated through the ROS and MAPK pathways, causing inflammation in the embryos.

Summary: This study explored the effect of miR-145 on cardiac fibrosis in heart failure mice and its target gene MAP3K3. The levels of miR-145 were decreased in heart failure mice and Ang II-treated cardiac fibroblasts. Upregulation of miR-145 improved cardiac dysfunction and inhibited fibrosis by suppressing MAP3K3 expression. Blocking MAP3K3 or upregulating miR-145 can be potential treatments for heart failure and cardiac fibrosis.
