Summary: In this study, surface engineering of upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) was conducted to immobilize an antibody specific to cardiac troponin I (cTnI) for the detection of cTnI biomarker. The developed method demonstrated improved sensitivity and stability compared to the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Summary: This study used durum wheat debranning fractions (fine and coarse bran) as an ingredient in whole-meal spaghetti formulation to investigate their chemical-nutritional characteristics, specifically folate levels and sensory properties. The experimental pasta had higher folate content (40.5 μg/100 g) than commercial whole-meal pasta (28.3 μg/100 g), meeting the health claim requirements for folate (Reg. EU 432/2012) and dietary fiber nutritional claim. After cooking, pasta formulated with coarse bran retained 80% of folate and received good sensory acceptability. This suggests that whole-meal pasta formulated with folate-rich debranning fractions can serve as a natural functional food, potentially improving population health when integrated into the diet.

Summary: The ability to optically induce biological responses in 3D has been limited by the penetration of visible light, but hydrogels that convert red or near-IR light into blue light have been developed to trigger photochemical responses. This approach allows for precise control of cell function and may lead to new biochemical applications.

Summary: The properties of upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are crucial for their applications in biomedicine, particularly in terms of the penetration depth of excitation light. In this article, the penetration depth of different wavelength lasers in human blood was studied, finding that near-infrared light can penetrate up to a depth of 7.5 mm. Additionally, core/shell NaErF4/NaYF4 UCNPs were found to have advantageous luminescence properties, with their emission detectable through a 3.0 mm layer of blood using a 1532 nm laser. These findings suggest that NaErF4/NaYF4 UCNPs may be ideal alternatives to NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+/NaYF4.

Summary: The recent development of light-based 3D printing technologies has revolutionized additive manufacturing. Researchers have proposed using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in place of traditional two-photon printing (TPP) for photopolymerization. By converting near-infrared (NIR) light into visible/UV light, UCNPs initiate polymerization and open up new possibilities for constructing 3D structures with micrometer feature size using inexpensive light sources.

Summary: This study presents an upconversion-based single-photon imager for full-range and accurate 3-D imaging. Compared to previous imagers, the proposed system achieves significantly higher imaging speed and improved efficiency. The application of a high-repetition laser and a nanosecond optical delay line enables full-range imaging against high solar background noise.

Summary: Green-to-blue triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion is used to drive reversible photoisomerization of diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches using visible light. By carefully selecting the molecular system and experimental geometry, a single green light source can selectively trigger ring-opening and ring-closing reactions. The upconversion solution and DAE solution can be characterized concomitantly and individually without further separation processes. The efficiency of ring-closing reaction using upconverted photons is compared to direct isomerization with ultraviolet light.

Summary: This study successfully applied the MN assay on cryopreserved whole blood samples, demonstrating its reliability for radiosensitivity testing. Repeated analysis showed that MN values in cryopreserved blood samples remain stable for up to one year of storage. Radiosensitive patients were successfully identified using the MN assay on cryopreserved samples.

Summary: GdScO3 perovskite exhibits high thermal stability, high bandgap, and low phonon energy, making it ideal for optical applications such as infrared-to-visible photon upconversion emission. In this study, pristine and Yb3+, Er3+ co-doped GdScO3 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized at low temperatures, and their crystal structure, phase, and optical properties were analyzed. It was found that GdScO3 nanocrystals exhibit photon upconversion properties and can be used for non-contact luminescence-based temperature sensing.

Summary: A pillared-paddlewheel metal-organic framework (MOF) designed for efficient triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) was reported, achieving a high efficiency of 1.95% at an excitation power density of 25 mW cm(-2). The precise arrangements of sensitizers with respect to annihilators, and the high annihilator-to-sensitizer ratio, facilitate Dexter energy transfer in this extended structure.
