Summary: The aim of the study was to determine whether IBS is an independent risk factor for developing opioid addiction and related gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with IBD. The results showed that patients with concomitant IBD and IBS were more likely to be prescribed oral opioids and develop opioid dependence or abuse.

Summary: This study found that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who also have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are more likely to develop IBD-related complications and undergo surgical interventions. This suggests that IBS is an independent risk factor for the development of complications and surgeries in IBD patients.

Summary: Isotretinoin does not increase the risk of Crohn's disease, but it may be associated with a slight and temporary increase in the risk of ulcerative colitis. However, it can lower the risk of irritable bowel syndrome.

Summary: This study compares the differences in gut microbiota between newly diagnosed, treatment-naive adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients (CD and UC) with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and healthy individuals. The results show that changes in gut microbiota are detectable at the onset of disease and may play a significant role in the development of IBD.

Summary: Despite achieving remission in IBD, persistent gastrointestinal symptoms are common in quiescent IBD, which can be attributed to a wide range of overlapping gastrointestinal etiologies and systemic disorders. Delay in diagnosis can lead to patient suffering and unnecessary treatment escalation.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the bidirectional association between infectious gastroenteritis (IGE) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). By analyzing data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, it was found that there is a bidirectional association between IGE and IBD. IBD patients were more likely to have been exposed to IGE within 6 months to 5 years before diagnosis compared to non-IBD controls. Additionally, the risk of subsequent IGE was higher in IBD patients after diagnosis.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract that mainly affects young people. Recent studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of IBD.

Summary: The study systematically identified ultrasound scoring indices for assessing inflammatory bowel disease activity, with common components including bowel wall thickness, colour Doppler imaging, and bowel wall stratification. The correlation between ultrasound indices and reference standards, as well as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and other properties, varied within certain ranges. However, reliability and responsiveness data were limited, and most studies were rated with unclear or high risk of bias.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract with periods of remission and relapses. The etiopathogenesis is not fully understood, leading to only symptomatic treatment. There is a constant need to search for new high safety profile therapies for IBD.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. The American College of Gastroenterology has developed a clinical guideline using GRADE methodology for the management of IBS, recommending a positive diagnostic approach, specific tests, treatments, and gut-directed psychotherapy to improve symptoms for patients with IBS.

Summary: This study compared the duodenal and stool microbiomes of PPI users and non-users, finding differences in the relative abundance of certain microbial families in the duodenal and stool microbiomes of PPI users. However, PPI use was not associated with higher rates of SIBO. The clinical implications of these findings remain unclear.

Summary: This study compared the quality of studies used by IHME and MCEE to estimate mortality associated with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Shigella in 2016. The results showed that the majority of studies used by both modeling groups were of high quality, with an overrepresentation of studies from certain regions. Recommendations were made for future estimates of mortality associated with enteric diseases.

Summary: Shigella, a gram-negative bacterium, is a major cause of severe diarrhea and dysentery in children under five in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the development of promising Shigella vaccine candidates, the recommendation and adoption of such vaccines may face challenges due to declining disease rates, complex immunization programs, and availability of other vaccines.

Summary: Shigella species cause severe disease and an effective vaccine is urgently needed. InvaplexAR vaccine, a subunit vaccine approach, demonstrated increased immunogenicity in pre-clinical studies and was tested in a phase 1 trial, showing safety and potential for inducing immune responses.
