Summary: Novel cuffless wearable devices and smartphone applications claiming to measure blood pressure have gained popularity among healthcare professionals and patients, despite serious concerns about their accuracy and validation challenges. Existing standards for automated BP measurement devices are not suitable for cuffless devices, leading to potentially misleading conclusions in published data. Further research is needed to evaluate the capabilities and limitations of these emerging technologies.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the accuracy of noninvasive central blood pressure (cSBP) measurement. The results showed that noninvasive cSBP measurements are comparable to invasive measurements, although they may slightly underestimate true cSBP. The type of BP measurement device used may affect the accuracy of measurement, while the type of calibration method implemented does not have a significant influence.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the differences in blood pressure (BP) according to different BP measurement methods and assess hypertension phenotype. The results showed a large disparity between office BP and out-of-office BP, which became more pronounced when office BP was measured by auscultation. Therefore, it is recommended to use various BP measurement methods to accurately assess BP status.

Summary: This article presents a prototype of a new, non-invasive, cuffless, self-calibrating blood pressure measuring device equipped with a pneumatic pressure sensor. The developed device does not require a cuff and can be used on arteries where cuff placement would be impossible. The obtained results showed that the systolic and diastolic pressure measurement errors of the proposed device were within acceptable limits.

Summary: This study assessed cuff size variation across validated BP devices and found that none of the devices' cuffs aligned with the AHA recommendations. Over half of the devices were only compatible with a broad-range cuff, generally excluding larger arm sizes. Inconsistent terminology and lack of standardization were also observed among manufacturers.

Summary: This article highlights the importance of methodological transparency and consensus in assessing central aortic blood pressure (aoBP) for both clinical and physiological research. Factors such as recording method, mathematical model, and calibration of pulse waveforms should be taken into consideration when analyzing and comparing aoBP data from different sources. The article also addresses the lack of consensus on non-invasive measurement of aoBP and the potential role of aoBP-guided therapy in everyday practice.

Summary: This study found that engagement with self-monitoring of blood pressure (BP) declines over time, but varies among individuals. Three distinct groups were identified based on 1-year patterns of self-monitoring of BP behaviors. Persistent daily use, which was associated with lower BP levels, was less common but more common among older participants.

Summary: This study found that the day-to-day blood pressure variability (BPV) of systolic blood pressure is independently associated with cardiac biomarkers NT-pro BNP, liver index Fib4, and renal function eGFR, but not with troponin T. In contrast, diastolic BPV was not found to be associated with eGFR.

Summary: Preventing, diagnosing, and controlling high blood pressure is a global health priority. However, most blood pressure measuring devices are not validated by recognized protocols. This study aimed to identify the devices that have been adequately validated and found that most validations follow the 2010 European Society of Hypertension (ESH) revision, with only a few following the more demanding 2018 protocol. The universal AAMI/ESH/ISO standard is considered the protocol of the century, but there is a need for more validations, especially for the new technologies in the market.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), even though DAA treatment can lower the risk, some patients still develop HCC after DAA therapy. Research found that Wnt/β-catenin signaling remains active in chronic HCV-infected patients after DAA treatment, but metformin may reverse this pathway to treat HCV-associated HCC.

Summary: This study elucidates the impact of impaired autophagic degradation and blocking extracellular vesicle release on persistent HCV infection, revealing potential antiviral strategies. Inhibition of extracellular vesicle release severely suppresses virus replication without affecting host cell viability, and triggers interferon lambda 1 secretion, suggesting it as an innate immune escape mechanism promoting persistent HCV infection.

Summary: This study aimed to compare thyroid sonoelastography values between patients with operated recurrent nodular goiter and non-operated individuals, finding that nodules in operated recurrent patients had higher SWV values. Therefore, utilizing reference sonoelastography values in unoperated patients may lead to misleading results in distinguishing benign and malignant lesions.

Summary: The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has rapidly spread worldwide, causing a global pandemic. In addition to respiratory symptoms, the virus can also affect the gastrointestinal system. GI symptoms such as anorexia, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea have been reported. The virus can potentially be transmitted through the fecal-oral route, and viral RNA has been detected in blood samples of infected patients, indicating hematologic dissemination.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the thyroid function test (TFT) results and anti-thyroid antibody titers in acute COVID-19 patients, as well as the changes during the 6-month recovery period among survivors. Thyroid dysfunction was noted in 56.4% of patients on admission, and was associated with higher rates of severe disease. Most survivors were euthyroid at 6 months post-discharge, but some showed increased anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) titers and subclinical hypothyroidism during the convalescence period.

Summary: In this article, a rare case of concurrent pituitary adenoma and meningioma with apoplexy is reported. The patient presented with sudden-onset headache, nausea, vomiting, and optic nerve paralysis. Emergency transsphenoidal surgery was performed, and the patient received l-thyroxine and hydrocortisone treatment in the post-operative period. This is the first case of such co-existence with apoplexy described in the literature.

Summary: Among COVID-19 patients, those with PE tend to be older, more likely to be male, have lower oxygen saturation, and higher levels of clinical indicators and D-dimer. A D-dimer cut-off value of 4211 ng/mL was found for predicting PE, suggesting screening for PE in COVID-19 patients with elevated D-dimer levels.
