The main objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of incubating conditions on the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) test in order to harmonize the test protocol. For this serum bottles were incubated with anaerobic sludge (from UASB reactor treating domestic sewage) in factorial planned experiments which assessed the influence of the temperature, substrate concentration, food/microorganism (F/M) ratio, presence of yeast extract in the medium, as well as type of carbon and nutrient solution. The results showed that the tested methane measuring methods (volumetric with biogas characterization, volumetric with gas wash in alkaline solution, and manometric by using the OxiTop(A (R)) system) presented a similar performance. The maintenance of a small gaseous phase volume (e.g. 10% of the total volume) resulted in higher SMA values; and the ideal substrate concentration for the SMA test ranged from 0.5 to 3.0 gCOD/l since higher acetate concentration caused sludge inhibition. The suggested temperature for the test is 35A degrees C and the best F/M ratio varied from 0.125 to 0.750 gCOD/gVS, and this seemed to be the most influent parameter for the SMA test. Finally tests performed with nutrient solution complemented by yeast extract resulted in the highest SMA values.

Preliminary assessment of antimicrobial activity and acute toxicity of norfloxacin chlorination by-product mixture

Rhuana Valdetario Medice, Robson Jose de Cassia Franco Afonso, Marys Lene Braga Almeida, Sergio Francisco de Aquino, Marcelo Libanio

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of the chlorination by-products of norfloxacin on a bench scale. Results showed that the by-products lost antibacterial activity against E.coli and exhibited higher toxicity than pure norfloxacin in acute toxicity tests using Artemia salina microcrustaceans.

Integrated production of second-generation ethanol and biogas from sugarcane bagasse pretreated with ozone

Diego Roberto Sousa Lima, Aline Gomes de Oliveira Paranhos, Oscar Fernando Herrera Adarme, Bruno Eduardo Lobo Baeta, Leandro Vinicius Alves Gurgel, Alexandre Soares dos Santos, Silvana de Queiroz Silva, Sergio Francisco de Aquino

Summary: This study evaluated the energy potential of biogas production from anaerobic digestion of sugarcane bagasse residues pre-treated with ozone for 2G ethanol production. It was found that mild ozonation conditions maximized ethanol production, with surplus energy generation covering the energy costs involved in the process. Combination of ozone treatment and alkaline extraction under suitable conditions also increased ethanol production and process sustainability.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of drugs in water supply and water for human consumption in Belem city, Northern Brazil. The results showed higher drug concentrations in raw water compared to treated water, and the full cycle treatment used in Bolonha filtered water chamber and treated water reservoir was not efficient for the complete removal of the compounds investigated.

Tylosin in anaerobic reactors: degradation kinetics, effects on methane production and on the microbial community

Aline Gomes de Oliveira Paranhos, Andressa Rezende Pereira, Yasmim Arantes da Fonseca, Silvana de Queiroz Silva, Sergio Francisco de Aquino

Summary: This study investigated the degradation kinetics of tylosin and the microorganisms involved in its anaerobic digestion. The results showed that increasing tylosin concentration in poultry litter had a stimulating effect on methane production. Metagenomic analyses suggested a syntrophic action between Methanobacterium archaea and bacteria such as Clostridium and Flexilinea, which played a crucial role in tylosin degradation.

Summary: This study evaluates the occurrence and removal of 24 compounds in water treatment plants in Brazil. The results show variations in the concentrations of these compounds in different seasons and treatment steps. The assessment of margin of exposure indicates potential risks associated with some compounds in treated water samples.

Methane production by anaerobic co-digestion of dairy manure and cassava wastes for energy recovery

Raissa Machado Maluf Martins, Yasmim Arantes da Fonseca, Marina Victal Faria, Sergio Francisco de Aquino, Oscar Fernando Herrera Adarme, Bruno Eduardo Lobo Baeta

Summary: In this study, anaerobic co-digestion of cassava wastewater, cassava bagasse, and dairy manure was investigated to produce biogas. A mixture experimental design was used to determine the optimal proportion of each substrate. The results showed that the highest methane yields were obtained with 100% cassava wastewater and a mixture of 66.7% dairy manure, 16.7% cassava bagasse, and 16.7% cassava wastewater. High proportions of cassava bagasse led to low pH and high volatile fatty acid production. An energy balance calculation showed that anaerobic co-digestion could replace 22.5% of the energy demanded by the cassava processing industry.

Summary: Pesticide contamination in water resources is a global threat, especially when considering mixture effects. A study in Brazil found that 3.2% of cities had pesticide occurrence above the limit of detection or quantification in surface freshwaters. The number increased to 117 cities when considering pesticide mixtures. The study highlights the importance of considering mixture effects in environmental risk assessment and the need for revising national environmental legislation to protect aquatic ecosystems in Brazil.
