Summary: Chronic pain in the elderly population is a current clinical challenge, as it leads to functional disability, coexisting psychological disorders, cognitive deficits, and sleep disturbances. The main painful complaints in the elderly are related to neurodegenerative and musculoskeletal conditions, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis, and osteoarthritis, which negatively affect their quality of life, social participation, physical activity, and daily activities. Organ dysfunction and existing diseases significantly influence the perception and responses to chronic pain in this group. Elderly people exhibit altered pain experience, with changes in pain processing mechanisms, possibly due to the degeneration of pain modulating circuits. Aging is also associated with an increase in pain threshold, decline of painful sensations, and decrease in pain tolerance. Elderly patients with chronic pain are at an increased risk for dementia and cognitive impairment.

Summary: The present review highlights the changes in food perception among head and neck cancer patients, including taste, texture, temperature, and other oral sensations. These changes not only have physiological importance but also convey psychological and psychosocial values. Comprehensive assessment of patients' food perception can lead to personalized dietary interventions to improve their eating experience and quality of life. More studies on oral somatosensory perception with larger sample sizes and standardized assessment methods are needed to fully understand its impact on eating behavior and quality of life.

Summary: Aging is a complex process that often leads to impaired functional capacity and low health-related quality of life, particularly due to the prevalence of chronic diseases in the elderly population. Regular physical activity has been shown to counteract some of the physiological effects of a sedentary lifestyle and increase life expectancy. An observational study compared the health-related quality of life of elderly females who engaged in structured physical activity sessions to those who had sedentary lifestyles. The results showed significant differences in energy/fatigue, emotional wellbeing, and social functioning, influenced by education level. Physical activity can have positive effects on reducing fatigue, improving emotional wellbeing, and enhancing social functioning among older women.

Summary: Reminiscence therapy (RT) has the potential to be an effective non-pharmacological therapy for elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). It can improve cognitive function, ameliorate depression, and enhance the quality of life of individuals with dementia. However, more research with long-term follow-up is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between multimorbidity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The results showed that stroke and the combination of hypertension and stroke had the greatest influence on HRQoL. Functional status partially mediated the relationship between the number of non-communicable diseases and HRQoL, while cognitive function played a moderating role in this relationship.

Summary: The development of immunosuppressants is essential for the success of solid organ transplant surgery, but can lead to neuropsychiatric symptoms. This case study presents the severe psychiatric symptoms experienced by a liver transplant patient after receiving cyclosporine and everolimus treatment, and discusses pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. A multidisciplinary approach between medical and psychosocial disciplines is crucial in managing post-transplant neuropsychiatric symptoms.
