There is an undeniable concern among the elderly about the mental changes they experience as they grow older. In general, the elderly tend to regard mental deterioration as a pathological condition, however these changes should be considered inherent in the aging process and in the last few years cognitive stimulation programs have been developed in order to address these concerns among the elderly. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of a cognitive training program on 53 subjects with age-related memory loss. The results of cognitive performance have been compared with a control group consisting of 51 subjects with no cognitive training. Moreover, this research analyses the relationship between cognitive changes and the variation in the perceived quality of life of the elderly people in both groups. The results show significant changes in the test group, demonstrating improved cognitive performance and quality of life perception. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study aimed to identify psychological and psychosocial variables that differentiate high consumers of healthcare resources from low consumers, to create a psychological profile for intervention programs. Significant predictors of high healthcare consumption included negative past, fatalistic present, psychological cognitive reactance, behavioral coping, health self-efficacy, and somatization levels. The statistical analysis data provided insights into creating a psychological profile for high consumers of healthcare resources.

Summary: The development of immunosuppressants is essential for the success of solid organ transplant surgery, but can lead to neuropsychiatric symptoms. This case study presents the severe psychiatric symptoms experienced by a liver transplant patient after receiving cyclosporine and everolimus treatment, and discusses pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. A multidisciplinary approach between medical and psychosocial disciplines is crucial in managing post-transplant neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Demographic transition and hospital admissions in Spanish centenarians, 2004-2020: Geographical variations and sex-related differences

Juan Carlos Pineiro-Fernandez, Ramon Rabunal-Rey, Ana Maseda, Eva Romay-Lema, Roi Suarez-Gil, Sonia Pertega-Diaz

Summary: This study describes the distribution and temporal trends of the centenarian population and their hospital admissions in Spain over the past two decades. It found a significant increase in the centenarian population and hospital admissions, with regional and sex-based differences. Women represented a larger proportion of centenarians and hospital admissions. Understanding these trends and differences is crucial for implementing interventions that ensure adequate healthcare for centenarians.
