Summary: This study aimed to evaluate if ADL task performance of frail elderlies can be assessed by an activity measurement based on an acceleration sensor integrated into a smartwatch, and to what degree kinematic parameters would be task independent. The results showed that ADL task performance can be assessed by smartwatch-based measures and further showed task-independent differences between the three levels of frailty. Frail elderly individuals' ADL performance was more impaired by physiological deficiencies than by cognitive functioning or sensorimotor control.

Summary: Activity Recognition is a method to identify specific activities from a set of actions, commonly used in smart home environments to monitor the health of elderly individuals. Recognizing daily activities remains challenging due to the unpredictable behaviors of elderly individuals. This study proposes an Artificial Intelligence-based prediction model for Activities of Daily Living, which achieves high accuracy compared to other supervised learning algorithms.

Summary: This review examined the effects of exercise interventions using portable exercise equipment on muscle strength, balance, and ability to perform activities of daily living in the oldest-old and frail. The results suggested that both single-component and multicomponent exercise interventions had positive effects on muscle strength and balance in older adults.

Summary: This study defines a loading index to quantify patellofemoral joint loading in various weightbearing exercises and activities. The results show that most rehabilitation exercises generate a moderate level of loading, with few exercises resembling walking or providing high-level loading. Exercises with high knee flexion tend to have higher patellofemoral joint loading.

Summary: One of the challenges in the field of human activity recognition in smart homes based on IoT sensors is the variability in the recorded data. In this article, a solution leveraging the concept of digital twins is proposed to address this issue and generate more varied datasets. The VirtualSmartHome simulator is introduced, specifically designed for modeling daily life activities in smart homes, and its realism is evaluated by comparing it with real-life activity data.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the positive effects of drinking herbal tea and tea on activities of daily living (ADL) in the elderly. The study used data from the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey (CLHLS) and divided the participants into three groups based on their frequency of consuming herbal tea and tea. The results showed that frequent consumption of herbal tea could effectively reduce the incidence of ADL disability, while the effect of tea drinking was relatively weaker.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of sleep quality in the relationship between activities of daily living (ADLs) and depression. The results showed that ADLs and sleep quality were positively associated with depression among the elderly. Sleep quality played a significant mediating role in the influence of ADLs on depression in the elderly in nursing homes. Therefore, timely detection and efficient interventions to promote physical function and improve sleep quality among the elderly in nursing homes are recommended.

Summary: Decreased physical activity and activities of daily living in hemodialysis patients are associated with a poor prognosis. Peripheral arterial disease further contributes to this deterioration. A study was conducted to assess the difficulty in activities of daily living and life-space assessment in different groups of hemodialysis patients based on their ankle-brachial index values. The findings revealed that patients with lower ankle-brachial index values exhibited higher rates of frailty and lower levels of life-space assessment and activities of daily living. Hence, patients with decreased ankle-brachial index values are likely to experience decline in physical activity and activities of daily living due to frailty and claudication.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal obesity on brain structure and metabolism in frail women and their reversibility in response to exercise. The results showed that offspring of lean/normal-weight mothers had higher white matter density compared to offspring of obese/overweight mothers. Exercise intervention resulted in an increase in white matter density, with a greater effect observed in offspring of lean/normal-weight mothers. These findings suggest that exercise has an impact on brain morphology and cognition in elderly frail women.

Summary: This study found that sedentary behavior time is associated with an increased risk of T2D; replacing sedentary behavior with a short duration of daily-life physical activities or structured exercise is related to a significant reduction in T2D risk. Furthermore, such association was stronger among those with a lower genetic risk of T2D.

Summary: This study evaluates the value of the person-centred, integrated care programme CCFE compared to usual care using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA). The results indicate that CCFE performs better than usual care in terms of enjoyment of life and person-centredness at 6 months. However, at 12 months, there is little difference between CCFE and usual care from the perspective of patients, informal caregivers, and professionals, while payers and policy-makers seem to prefer usual care.

Summary: The study showed that home-based physical exercise did not increase the number of days spent at home, but it prevented the deterioration of HRQoL. In the frail subgroup, intervention costs were compensated with decreased utilization of other health care and social services over 24 months.

Summary: This study describes the distribution and temporal trends of the centenarian population and their hospital admissions in Spain over the past two decades. It found a significant increase in the centenarian population and hospital admissions, with regional and sex-based differences. Women represented a larger proportion of centenarians and hospital admissions. Understanding these trends and differences is crucial for implementing interventions that ensure adequate healthcare for centenarians.
