Nutrition has been found to be associated with cognitive impairment, but it has not been established whether these associations are present solely in later life or whether they are present in younger age as well. HC is a good indicator of brain development and the most sensitive anthropometric indicator of prolonged malnutrition during early life. This study examined the interaction between early HC and later (nutrition screening initiative) nutritional factors on the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. The longitudinal factorial design had the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score as the dependent variable, with HC as one factor and nutritional risk as another. We studied a sample of 495 not cognitively impaired Korean participants with 2 years follow-up data. After multivariable adjustment, interactive effect between HC and nutritional risk was significantly associated with cognitive decline (F = 2.449, p = 0.045). Simple main effect analysis showed that compared with highest HC, lowest HC was associated with a cognitive decline. Nutritional risk was associated with cognitive function decline only in individuals with small HC. Therefore, the prevention for cognitive impairment and dementia should involve nutritional strategies throughout life. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study suggests that cities with higher levels of air pollution may have higher rates of mask-wearing, acting as a barrier to transmission of the virus during the early phase of the pandemic. Therefore, health behaviors, including wearing masks, play a crucial role in preventing infections.

Who has sustained psychological symptoms nine years after the Hebei Spirit oil spill?: The Health Effect Research on Hebei Spirit oil spill (HEROS) study

Kyung-Hwa Choi, Myung-Sook Park, Myung Ho Lim, Jong-Il Hur, Su Ryeon Noh, Woo-Chul Jeong, Hae-Kwan Cheong, Mina Ha

Summary: This study found that residents who participated in clean-up work for a longer period, had lower household income, and had chronic diseases were at higher risk for sustained psychological symptoms nine years after the Hebei Spirit oil spill in Korea in 2007. Women, younger individuals, and those with higher educational levels also showed increased risk for sustained symptoms in anxiety, depression, and psychosocial distress, but not PTSD. The results suggest that socioeconomic factors such as offshore and maritime occupations, lower income, and educational level interact with participating in clean-up work to increase the risk of sustained psychological symptoms.

Effects of mechanical ventilation on indoor air quality and occupant health status in energy-efficient homes: A longitudinal field study

Summary: This study evaluated the indoor air quality (IAQ) levels and daily health symptoms of adults and children living in energy-efficient homes (EEHs) compared to conventional buildings. The results showed that EEHs had lower indoor concentrations of pollutants, stable indoor temperature and humidity levels, and an association between improved IAQ parameters and reduced risk of daily symptoms. Symptoms like eye fatigue and skin dryness were reported, but were not statistically significantly different from those in conventional buildings.

Mosquito abundance in relation to extremely high temperatures in urban and rural areas of Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea from 2015 to 2020: an observational study

Ah-Young Lim, Hae-Kwan Cheong, Yeonseung Chung, Kisung Sim, Jong-Hun Kim

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of extremely high temperatures on the abundance of mosquitoes by analyzing time series data in Incheon Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea. Culex pipiens was the most common mosquito species in the urban region, while mosquitoes of the genus Aedes were the most common in the rural region. Exposure to extremely high temperatures reduced the abundance of Cx. pipiens mosquitoes to a greater extent than that of Anopheles spp. Urban mosquitoes showed higher tolerance to extreme heat compared to rural mosquitoes, suggesting adaptation to urban thermal environments.

Summary: This study combined the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data with daily air quality and weather data to provide a nationwide representative dataset for research on the health impact of air pollution. The study generated exposure data for over 85,000 individuals over an 11-year period, allowing for the calculation of short-term, mid-term, and long-term exposure to air pollutants and meteorological indices. The findings are expected to support researchers in studying the health impact of air pollution and climate change, aiding in the establishment of local health care plans.

Summary: This study describes the distribution and temporal trends of the centenarian population and their hospital admissions in Spain over the past two decades. It found a significant increase in the centenarian population and hospital admissions, with regional and sex-based differences. Women represented a larger proportion of centenarians and hospital admissions. Understanding these trends and differences is crucial for implementing interventions that ensure adequate healthcare for centenarians.
