Summary: Dried blood spot (DBS) detection is a convenient and reliable method for large-scale evaluation of arsenic exposure in human population. A Lego-spinner pretreatment device is designed for speciation analysis of arsenic in DBSs by IC-ICP-MS. The device can extract and separate arsenic species from the blood matrix efficiently, and the concentrations of arsenic species in the DBS are highly correlated with those in whole blood. The DBS sampling approach can effectively preserve arsenic species for at least 30 days, and the contents of arsenic species in DBSs prepared from capillary blood are in agreement with venous whole blood.

Summary: This study uses off-the-shelf infrared heaters to heat the sample introduction system on a Varian 820MS instrument, resulting in improved sensitivities and detection limits. The infrared heating increases sensitivities by a factor of 2 to 16 and improves detection limits by a factor of 1.1 to 3.5 for most analytes. It also reduces the formation of doubly charged species. The infrared heating also enhances plasma robustness.
