Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the mitigation of NIV in alcoholic fermentation using MF. The GSH content and PO activity were increased with the presence of NIV, and after 48 hours of fermentation, the alcohol profile was altered. By the end of the fermentation, NIV was mitigated by 56.5%. This method shows promise in reducing NIV contamination, although the mycotoxin can affect the chemical characteristics of the final product.

Summary: Microfluidics was used to prepare hyaluronic acid hydrogel microspheres as shells and con-covalently connected the inner core-SS-31 peptide and Wyrgrl peptide co-modified long-circulating liposomes loaded with resveratrol (REV) to the nano-network of microspheres to construct a Mito-Battery that could promote cell energy production and fight inflammation by targeted regulation of MRC functions. The modification of peptide could enhance its cellular uptake and improve the mitochondrial-targeting of Mito-Battery. Furthermore, REV loaded in liposomes could activate SIRT3 protein and synergistically enhance the MRC electron transfer efficiency with SS-31. Mito-Battery effectively delayed the progression of the disease in a rat bone and joint model. Thus, Mito-Battery has great potential in the treatment of degenerative diseases related to MRC dysfunction.

Summary: Surface oxidation engineering is effective in enhancing biocatalytic activity of nanomaterials. This study developed a facile one-pot oxidation strategy to synthesize partially oxidized molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (ox-MoS2 NSs) with good water solubility, serving as an excellent peroxidase substitute. The ox-MoS2 NSs demonstrated enhanced peroxidase-mimic activity and were utilized for colorimetric sensing of glutathione (GSH) with good sensitivity and stability.

Summary: Zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) exhibits intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, but its catalytic activity is severely affected by the inherent defects in chemical and thermal stability. The addition of ATP enhances the catalytic activity and stability of ZIF-67, enabling colorimetric detection of glutathione.

Summary: Molecular docking studies revealed that the distance between selenenylsulfides and the active site plays a crucial role in inhibiting the glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activity by preventing reduction by glutathione reductase (GR). Additionally, strong binding of selenenylsulfides to the active site results in inhibition of GPx-like activity.

Summary: The synthesis and antioxidant activities of three new classes of ionic organoselenium compounds with cationic benzimidazolium and imidazolium ring systems containing selenocyanates as counterions were described. Mechanistic studies showed the feasibility of cyclization processes in the presence of potassium selenocyanate (KSeCN). The cyclic selenazolium and selenazinium compounds exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activities than the corresponding acyclic selenocyanates, possibly due to their cationic nature which may target and scavenge mitochondrial ROS in the cellular medium.

Summary: In this study, self-assembled Pseudomonas geniculate cell membranes were prepared as drug nanocarriers (BMMPs) with high biosafety and efficient internalization by cancer cells. Coated with nanoselenium and loaded with Mn2+ ions and doxorubicin, the functional nanoplatform (BMMP-Mn2+/Se/DOX) exhibited increased effectiveness in inducing cancer cell death through mitochondrial and nuclear targeting pathways. This nanoplatform holds promise as a safe and effective drug delivery system for cancer therapy.

Summary: Copper-catalyzed direct selenation of substituted 2-bromo-N-phenylbenzamide substrates with elemental selenium powder provides methoxysubstituted isoselenazolones through C-Se and Se-N bond formations. O-demethylation of the methoxy-substituted analogues using boron tribromide yields phenolic substituted isoselenazolones. Isoselenazolones exhibit good glutathione peroxidase-like antioxidant activity.

Summary: This study analyzed the mitochondrial metabolism in the early stage of type 1 diabetes, and found that the mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production in the heart of diabetic animals were similar to the control group, but Mn-SOD activity decreased and H2O2 production increased. This suggests the presence of mitochondrial dysfunction in the early stage of type 1 diabetes, but without irreversible damage.

Summary: Bis(3-amino-1-hydroxybenzyl)diselenide was synthesized using 7-nitro-3H-2,1-benzoxasele-nole and sodium benzene tellurolate. 1,3-benzoselenazoles were then synthesized from bis(3-amino-1-hydroxybenzyl)diselenide and aryl aldehydes using acetic acid as a catalyst. The compounds exhibited good antioxidant activity and antibacterial properties against biofilm formation.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of mitochondrial antioxidants to protect sperm quality during cryopreservation. The results showed that the addition of BGP-15 or L-carnitine to the cryopreservation medium improved sperm motility and prevented loss of viability. These antioxidants also reduced DNA oxidative damage, with BGP-15 significantly reducing DNA fragmentation. Overall, this study highlights the importance of mitochondrial antioxidants in improving long-term fertility preservation in males.
