Summary: This study aimed to test the effect of a newly developed brief motivational intervention on heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems among young adults in the emergency department. The randomized controlled trial found that the intervention group did not show an increase in heavy drinking days, while the control group did. This suggests that implementing motivational interventions in the emergency department has a positive effect on heavy drinking among young adults.

Summary: The German treatment guideline recommends that general practitioners offer brief advice on reducing alcohol consumption to at-risk patients. This study aimed to estimate the implementation of this recommendation using population data. The results showed that only a small proportion of hazardous and harmful drinking respondents reported ever receiving GP advice on reducing alcohol consumption, and the likelihood of receiving advice/support was associated with age, smoking, and alcohol consumption level.

Summary: Through an iterative design process, researchers developed a new motivational intervention model for young adults admitted to the Emergency Department with alcohol intoxication. The development was based on literature review, qualitative analysis, expert consultation, and adjustment based on feedback. Insights from semi-structured interviews highlighted the acceptability and feasibility of the model, leading to adjustments in information delivery and content.

Summary: Intrusive memories are common and distressing after trauma. A novel one-session intervention was found to reduce intrusive memories over the subsequent week. A pilot randomized controlled trial in a Swedish hospital emergency department showed that a brief behavioral intervention resulted in fewer intrusive memories of trauma at both week 1 and week 5 compared to a control condition.

Summary: The study conducted a randomized controlled trial at a pediatric emergency department to test the hypothesis that the SexHealth intervention could increase health service uptake among sexually active adolescents. The results showed that the intervention was feasible, well-accepted by youth, and led to increased uptake of health services during the emergency department visit.

Summary: The consumption of caffeine in the diet has a significant impact on the nervous system and can both relieve and trigger headaches. Caffeine affects headaches, particularly migraine, through mechanisms that have yet to be fully understood. It is also an important therapeutic agent for certain types of headaches and can cause caffeine withdrawal headaches when abruptly discontinued.

Summary: The feasibility of the PPKAY intervention in reducing alcohol use among emergency department injury patients in Tanzania was evaluated. The study showed that the intervention was feasible and acceptable, with high rates of recruitment and retention. The results support the need for a full trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the PPKAY intervention in a low-income country.

Summary: This study evaluated the sustainability of a decision-support intervention for outpatient management of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) after 4 years. The results showed that outpatient management rates remained high for patients with acute PE after the intervention, but there was still a gap in outpatient management for lower-risk patients.

Summary: In a sample of emergency department chest radiographs, the study suggests that the generative AI model produces reports with similar clinical accuracy and higher textual quality compared to teleradiologist reports. Implementing the model in clinical workflow can provide timely alerts for life-threatening pathology while assisting in imaging interpretation and documentation.

Summary: Emergency department (ED) triage models are designed to prioritize patients for treatment. This study aimed to characterize disparities in ED care access, particularly unexplained queue jumps (UQJ), and found that marginalized populations were more likely to experience UQJs. The study highlights the importance of standardizing triage processes to mitigate biases and ensure equitable access to emergency care.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of a smartphone application for individuals presenting to the Emergency Department with migraine. Results showed high satisfaction levels among participants towards the app and PMR, with more frequent PMR use associated with increased headache-free days. The findings suggest that smartphone-based PMR is a feasible and acceptable intervention for migraine patients in the ED setting, with a need for future focus on intervention engagement.

Summary: Emergency medicine clinicians have the unique position to provide interventions to enhance linkage to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder in the acute overdose period. Little is known about patient perspectives to effectively engage patients immediately following opioid overdose. This study explored patients' perspectives on substance use treatment, perceived needs, and contextual factors influencing their engagement with treatment and other patient support services in the acute post-opioid overdose period.

Summary: With the opioid overdose epidemic escalating, there is an urgent need for treatment innovations, such as the use of extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP), to address barriers faced by both patients and clinicians in the emergency department (ED). This article provides information on the pharmacokinetics of a new 7-day XR-BUP formulation and reports on the feasibility of its use in the ED setting based on early experiences from a clinical trial. The medication has been approved for the treatment of moderate to severe opioid use disorder (OUD) in adults and our report includes data on approximately 800 ED patients who received the XR-BUP preparation between June 2020 and July 2023.

Summary: Clinical pharmacists play a crucial role in promoting ED-initiated buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. The study identified six themes, including varying levels of pharmacist comfort and experience with ED-initiated buprenorphine, unique challenges for patients with OUD, and the critical role of pharmacists in successful program implementation and quality improvement. Training and leveraging existing pharmacy resources were identified as facilitation needs to support practice change.
