Summary: This study evaluated the association between a school-based screening and brief intervention (SBI) program and substance use among youths. The results showed that exposure to the SBI program was associated with a smaller increase in cannabis use among middle school students. These findings suggest that implementing SBI programs in schools may help reduce substance use among adolescents.

Summary: Approximately one fifth of healthcare professionals drink to hazardous levels, with higher prevalence estimates observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It may be that healthcare professionals used alcohol to cope with the additional trauma and stressors. Further research is needed to investigate whether this is sustained in the post-pandemic period.

Summary: Frequency of alcohol consumption is a stronger predictor of dependence and harmful drinking in younger drinkers, while quantity per occasion has a stronger influence on the overall AUDIT score. However, in older drinkers, frequency is not always a significant predictor of dependence and is a weak predictor of harmful drinking.

Summary: Alcohol consumption and harmful use are expected to increase in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting the need for cost-effective measures to reduce alcohol exposure. Screening and brief intervention (BI) for alcohol problems are evidence-based measures, but their implementation in these countries is limited due to lack of resources and training. Non-specialist health workers show promise in delivering psychological interventions for alcohol use disorders in low- and middle-income countries.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of brief interventions on alcohol and HIV outcomes in PLHIV with alcohol misuse. The results showed that compared to the control group, brief interventions significantly reduced daily alcohol consumption and heavy drinking days within 3-6 months post-intervention. Brief interventions also decreased the odds of mortality in 6-12 months. However, there was no effect on alcohol risk scores, transition to harmful alcohol use, adherence to Anti-Retroviral Therapy, and viral suppression.
