Sperm motility is one of the most widely used parameters in order to evaluate boar semen quality. However, this trait can only be measured after puberty. Thus, the use of genomic information appears as an appealing alternative to evaluate and improve selection for boar fertility traits earlier in life. With this study we aimed to identify SNPs with significant association with sperm motility in two different commercial pig populations and to identify possible candidate genes within the identified QTL regions. We performed a single-SNP genome-wide association study using genotyped animals from a Landrace-based (L1) and a Large White-based (L2) pig populations. For L1, a total of 602 animals genotyped for 42,551 SNPs were used in the association analysis. For L2, a total of 525 animals genotyped for 40,890 SNPs were available. After the association analysis, a false discovery rate q-value <= 0.05 was used as the threshold for significant association. No SNPs were significantly associated with sperm motility in L1, while six SNPs on Sus scrofa chromosome 1 (position 117.26-119.56 Mb) were significant in L2. The mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase (MTFMT) gene, which affects translation efficiency of proteins in sperm cells, was identified as a putative candidate gene. The significant markers identified in this study may be useful to enhance the genetic improvement of sperm motility by selection of boars at an earlier age under a marker assisted selection strategy. Rogowski Coil Sensors for Measuring Lightning Strike Currents on Mechanical Aircraft Joints

Jordi Sole-Lloveras, Marco A. Azpurua, Marcos Quilez, Ferran Silva

Summary: The study proposes a Rogowski coil sensor design to measure current flux in the mechanical joints of different fuselage panels. The sensor is analyzed theoretically, modeled in a circuit, and a printed circuit board (PCB) Rogowski coil is designed for measuring high-intensity pulsed currents. The probe's characteristics are evaluated through S-parameters, and its transient response is validated through simulation. The Rogowski coil sensor is then experimentally evaluated in measuring a surge current pulse.

Time-Domain Electromagnetic Characterization of Reaction Wheel for Space Applications

Marc Pous, Dongsheng Zhao, Marco A. Azpurua, Teodor Bozhanov, Ferran Silva, Johannes Wolf

Summary: The electromagnetic characterization of reaction wheels is essential for space science missions to meet the ac magnetic field cleanliness requirements and prevent interference on sensitive instrumentation. This article proposes a complete assessment, including measuring the magnetic flux vector under different operational modes and dynamic conditions, using a test setup based on multichannel acquisition and multidomain postprocessing. The focus of the measurement campaign was on the low-frequency range, and capturing the B-field in the time-domain enabled complementary analysis for understanding the reaction wheel's electromagnetic performance.

Genomic prediction in Brazilian Guzera cattle: application of a single-step approach to productive and reproductive traits

Eula Regina Carrara, Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz Peixoto, Alessandra Alves da Silva, Frank Angelo Tomita Bruneli, Henrique Torres Ventura, Lenira El Faro Zadra, Luiz Antonio Josahkian, Renata Veroneze, Paulo Savio Lopes

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of using single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) for genomic prediction of productive and reproductive traits in Guzera cattle. The results showed that ssGBLUP was feasible and could increase the accuracy of breeding values without significantly impacting predictive ability and bias. Although the number of genotyped animals and the size of the database were small for some traits, the individual accuracies of breeding values were evidently increased in the genomic evaluation.

Estimation of genetic parameters and inbreeding depression in Piau pig breed

Leticia Fernanda de Oliveira, Paulo Savio Lopes, Layla Cristien Cassia Miranda Dias, Leandro Magno Dornelas e Silva, Hugo Teixeira Silva, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes, Daniele Botelho Diniz Marques, Delvan Alves da Silva, Renata Veroneze

Summary: This study estimated genetic parameters, effective population size, inbreeding, and inbreeding depression in Piau pigs. The results showed low direct heritabilities for birth weight and weaning weight, while average pre-weaning daily weight gain showed moderate heritability. There were high genetic correlations between weight at birth and weight at weaning, as well as weight at weaning and average pre-weaning daily weight gain. Inbreeding increased over generations and led to a reduction in effective population size. Inbreeding had a significant effect on average pre-weaning daily weight gain, with a decrease of 0.005 g for every 1% increase in inbreeding coefficient. Increasing effective population size is necessary to control inbreeding and preserve genetic variability in the Piau pig population.

Renata de Fatima Bretanha Rocha, Arielly Oliveira Garcia, Pamela Itajara Otto, Marcos Vinicius Barbosa da Silva, Marta Fonseca Martins, Marco Antonio Machado, Joao Claudio do Carmo Panetto, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes

Summary: The study aimed to verify the impact of ROH and inbreeding depression on total oocytes and embryos in Gir Indicine cattle, and to identify genes and enriched regions related to these traits. Generally, an increase in ROH was found to decrease the number of total oocytes and viable embryos. Additionally, multiple genes and genomic regions were identified as being associated with different breeding values for these traits.

Summary: This study quantified runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity-rich regions (HRR) in a subpopulation of Guzer & aacute; cattle and examined ROH and HRR islands. The results showed that the inbreeding coefficients determined by ROH were higher than other cattle breeds' and higher than pedigree-based inbreeding in the Guzer & aacute; breed obtained in previous studies. Additionally, genes identified in ROH and HRR islands were associated with dairy and beef traits, reproductive traits, and disease resistance.
