Summary: The study investigates the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) derived from marine organisms and finds that marine invertebrates, especially Bivalvia, are rich sources of highly sulfated or branched GAGs. A novel fucosylated heparan sulfate (Fuc-HS) is identified from the midgut gland of the Japanese scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis. Scallop HS exhibits resistance to GAG-degrading enzymes and shows anti-coagulant and neurite outgrowth-promoting activities. These findings suggest that the midgut gland of scallops is a valuable source of biologically active Fuc-HS.

Summary: Anisotropy plays a crucial role in the organization and healing of neural tissues, and holds great potential for developing regeneration strategies. The study demonstrates the fabrication of microfibers from charged ECM components using interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation, which can mimic the mechanical properties of neural tissues. These fibers are biocompatible and promote the formation of neural processes, enabling the development of neural cells.

Summary: The study found that not all gut bacteria capable of degrading chondroitin sulfate could also degrade hyaluronan, despite having lyases that act on both compounds. In the model organism Bacteroides, a lyase along with surface binding proteins may be involved in hyaluronan breakdown, and degradation of these compounds provides public goods for other bacteria. Cooperative degradation and cross-feeding may be widespread in mucosal glycan utilization.

Summary: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are long polysaccharides found on the cell surface and extracellular matrix of animal cells, and play important roles in cellular processes and diseases. GAGs are complex molecules with extensive structural and functional heterogeneity, and their biosynthesis is a non-template driven process involving a group of enzymes. Due to their key roles in cell homeostasis and disease, targeting the assembly and function of GAGs is of great interest as a therapeutic approach.

Summary: In this study, CS oligosaccharides (CSOs) were enzymatically prepared and their therapeutic potential for postmenopausal osteoporosis was explored. The results showed that CS and CSOs could effectively alleviate osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy in rats. CSOs exhibited a more significant alleviating effect compared to CS. These findings suggest that CSOs have great potential as daily interventions for delaying the progression of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Summary: Polysaccharides extracted from fish and sea cucumber were found to stimulate bone marrow release of blood cells and have a significant effect on immunosuppressed mice, promoting proliferative activity of hematopoietic cells and restoration of spleen function. Further research on oligosaccharides as potential drugs for prophylaxis and therapy of hematopoiesis inhibition post chemotherapy and transplantation is warranted.

Summary: In this study, the physicochemical properties and derivatives of Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate from sea cucumber Ludwigothurea grisea (FCSLg) were analyzed to decipher its structure. Oligosaccharides analysis revealed the presence of mono-fucose and heterodisaccharide branches in FCSLg, with the di-fucosyl branch being determined as D-GalNAcR1-(alpha 1,2)-LFucR2. The diverse sulfation patterns in the branches complicated the structure. This study provides a new understanding of FCSLg and offers a reliable method for deciphering FCS with complex branches.

Summary: Fucosylated glycosaminoglycan (FG) extracted from sea cucumbers has anticoagulant effects, but also carries risks of platelet aggregation and activation. Research found that the impact of FG on human platelet aggregation depends on its sulfation pattern and molecular weight; TaFG induced platelet aggregation mediated by PI3K requires platelet secretion for amplification.
