Red-Emitting, Acene-Doped Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles that Respond Ratiometrically to Photogenerated 1O2

Valentina Brega, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: This paper introduces a new type of fluorophores, conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs), that exhibit a ratiometric response upon photo-oxidation and can be tuned for emission wavelength by blending different conjugated polymers and dopants. Through a rational design process and refining the compositions, these CPNs possess desirable characteristics for analytical applications such as utility in aqueous environments, high quantum yield, emission of red light, and ratiometric luminescent responses.

Bridging the Void: Halogen Bonding and Aromatic Interactions to Program Luminescence and Electronic Properties of π-Conjugated Materials in the Solid State

Seth A. Sharber, William J. Mullin, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: This article discusses the importance of controlling the packing of pi-conjugated materials for their properties and performance, introduces the application of halogen bonding and interactions of aromatic rings in noncovalent control, demonstrates the achievement of specific solid-state properties through design assembly, and suggests strategies for future designs of π-conjugated molecular materials.

Optimizing the self-assembly of conjugated polymers and small molecules through structurally programmed non-covalent control

William J. Mullin, Seth A. Sharber, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: Organic conjugated polymers and oligomers are important in electronic applications due to their solution processability and structural tunability, with the optoelectronic properties influenced by constitutional structure in dilute environments and by intramolecular conformation and intermolecular electronic coupling in the solid state. Developing strategies to optimize solid-state packing is crucial for enhancing electronic capabilities of conjugated materials.

Tuning Stiffness of Free-Standing Hydrogen-Bonded LbL Films with Fe3+ Coordination

Yu Yan, Matthew Feeney, Luke M. Davis, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: A simple approach to cross-link free-standing hydrogen-bonded LbL films was reported in this paper, in which the stiffness of the films increased by three orders of magnitude upon cross-linking with Fe3+. The mechanical properties of these films can also be tuned using light by the photoinduced reduction of coordinated iron(III) ions.

Electronic effects of conjugated aryl groups on the properties and reactivities of di(arylethynyl)tetracenes

Yu Yan, Valentina Brega, Manuel M. Pina, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: The photochemical oxidations of acenes can pose challenges for their optoelectronic applications, but they also form the basis for many luminescent sensing schemes. Diethynyl substitution is widely adopted to control oxidation and improve solubility and processability of long acenes, but the influence of differences between the alkyne groups on key properties of long acenes remains largely unknown.

Crystal engineering of heterocyclic arylene(ethynylene) oligomers through programmed aromatic stacking

William J. Mullin, Peter Mueller, Anthony J. Schaefer, Elisa Guzman, Steven E. Wheeler, Samuel W. Thomas

Summary: This study investigates the stacking interactions between aromatic rings and heterocycles, revealing that fluorinated side-chains and electron-rich units have interactions in the solid state, while electron-deficient units are incompatible. These interactions play a significant role in compound stability.
