Summary: This study found that both chemical and natural ageing of commercial PVC microplastics can lead to the release of trace metals into the environment, with Pb showing the highest release. Additionally, the addition of PVC to soil significantly increased the release of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn after incubation.

Summary: Salinity in coastal Bangladesh's drinking water poses a severe crisis in socio-economic, environmental, and human health safety. The study analyzed tube well water samples for trace metals and found that salinity-induced FDOM influences water quality and health risks, especially for children.

Summary: A novel mixed-mode online solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was developed in this study for the recovery of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) from environmental water samples. The method was further coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to establish a fully automated analytic method. The performance of the mixed-mode SPE cartridge was evaluated and the method was successfully applied for the screening and quantification of TrOCs in various water matrices.

Summary: This study examined the trace metals species in surface sediments of the Taiwanese river estuarine mouths and the Taiwan Strait using a sequential extraction method. Based on the metal species present in sediments, trace metals can be divided into three groups. In addition, the total concentrations of trace metals in the analyzed sediments seem to be influenced by several factors. The metals contamination status assessed by three environmental indices suggests minor contamination by trace metals, with a few exceptions at some stations.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mobility, spatial distribution, possible sources, and potential ecological risks associated with trace metals Cu, Mn, and Ni in sediments around industrial and artisanal gold mines in northern Cote d'Ivoire. The results indicated that the concentrations of Cu, Ni, and Mn did not vary across different sampling stations. The possible pollution sources were identified as both anthropogenic and natural inputs. The extraction procedure showed low mobility of these trace metals. The risk assessment indicated low-to-medium risk for organisms.

Summary: Although not regulated in directives like the Water Framework Directive of the European Union, the investigation of geogenic background concentrations of certain elements such as precious metals is becoming increasingly important for early detection of potential environmental pollution. A methodological approach using matrix separation and pre-concentration on the strong anion exchange resin TEVA(R) Resin has been developed for the determination of Ag, Pt, Pd, and Au in groundwater.

Summary: This study explored an energy-saving method for lipid extraction from thickened microalgae using DME as the solvent and an entrainer solution for flocculation. Optimal extraction conditions were determined, and various analytical techniques were used to compare the results with other extraction methods. The DME-based approach showed high efficiency and economic benefits, while highlighting the need for trace metal purification in subsequent refining processes.

Summary: The geochemical fractions and contamination status of trace metals in coastal sediments of central western Taiwan were investigated using the Tessier sequential extraction method. The trace metals were classified into three groups based on their fractions in sediments. The study found that the total concentrations of metals in group 1 were mainly dominated by the residual fraction, whereas group 2 metals had significant contributions from labile fractions such as carbonate, Fe-Mn oxides, and organic matter. The results also highlighted the importance of organic carbon content in sediments in influencing the metals' concentration. The contamination assessment showed minor contamination by trace metals in the Mailiao coastal sediments, with particular concern on lead due to its presence in the labile fraction.

Summary: This study introduces a fully automatic separation system for the online determination of ultra-trace rare earth elements (REEs) in seawater and applies it to coastal water samples from the Pearl River Estuary in China. The results show variations in the REE distribution patterns of different layers of seawater, potentially due to the mixing of light rare earth element-enriched bottom seawater. Additionally, a positive Gd anomaly in river water and seawater is observed, which may be attributed to anthropogenic pollution from hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry.

Summary: The Fe/S-bearing erdite flocculant has been effective in the precipitation of heavy metals from real electroplating wastewater, but the drawback of producing a large amount of sludge has been addressed through a multistep separation method. Through this method, the recycling efficiency of Fe/Cu/Zn/Ni from the sludge reached high levels, providing an alternative strategy for resource utilization of Fe/S-bearing solid waste.
