Summary: Luwak coffee, known as civet coffee, is a precious and exotic type of coffee. This study used a comparative metabolomics approach to analyze the secondary and aroma metabolites of Luwak coffee and other coffee products. The results showed that Luwak coffee is derived from C. arabica and identified several new markers. Aroma analysis revealed higher levels of guaiacol derivatives, pyrazines, and furans in roasted Luwak coffee compared to roasted C. arabica. Quantification using NMR found lower levels of alkaloids in Luwak coffee compared to C. arabica.

Summary: Plant-based metabolomics studies aim to discover new active compounds, determine vegetation period, investigate adulteration, evaluate correlation activity and metabolite levels, and monitor quality control of medicinal plants. However, the chemical differences of primary and secondary metabolites in complex natural products present challenges for analysis, ranging from sample collection to preparation, and from analysis to metabolite annotation and quantification. A comprehensive evaluation of current and new trends in plant metabolomics helps researchers in designing their studies holistically.

Summary: With the advancement of technology and nanotechnology, new extraction sorbents have been created and effectively used for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of target analytes. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) magnetic composites and synthesized silica based magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbents for the preconcentration of emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater samples. The proposed methods achieved low quantitation limits and satisfactory recoveries, showing that it is suitable for the determination of target ECs in aquatic systems.

Summary: The research found that during water aging, the carbonyl and sulfoxide groups in bitumen increased, the peak temperature of thermal cracking rose, and the amount of hydrogen nuclei on aliphatic groups increased, indicating hydrogen substitution and structural dissimilation. In addition, compounds containing active functional groups undergo oxidation reactions, aromatic compounds undergo polymerization reactions, ultimately shifting product properties to asphaltenes.

Summary: In this study, three in-situ techniques, GC-MS, H-1 NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy, were used to qualitatively analyze 318 drug samples. The majority of samples consisted of a single component, with cocaine being the most prevalent. Some samples were found to be adulterated cocaine, consisting of two or more components.

Summary: This study compared the analysis of carbohydrates using four common chromatographic methods coupled to mass spectrometry. It was found that gas chromatography and reversed-phase liquid chromatography, after derivatisation, showed superior separation performance compared to the other methods. Targeted analysis using different working modes of the mass spectrometer improved sensitivity and repeatability, with RP-LC-MS in MRM mode after derivatisation being the most suitable method for monosaccharide analysis.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effects of Bouvardia ternifolia root extracts on the blood-brain barrier and the positive regulation of cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, and characterized the compounds present in the dichloromethane (BtD) and hexane (BtH) extracts. The results showed that BtH and BtD extracts significantly reduced LPS-induced blood-brain barrier leakage and modulated the production of cytokines. This research provides important insights into the pharmacological effects of Bouvardia ternifolia.

Summary: In this study, alpha-chloromethylketimines have been synthesized through a gold-catalyzed hydroamination reaction of aromatic and aliphatic 1-chloroalkynes with aromatic amines. This method allows the preparation and spectroscopic characterization of alpha-chloromethylketimines with high purity, complete conversion, and atom economy. The synthetic usefulness of this methodology has been demonstrated through the preparation of beta-chloroamines and indoles.

Summary: Poly(pyrazolyl)borate ligands can be synthesized by reacting highly reactive haloboranes with in situ formed pyrazolides under mild conditions. This versatile method allows for the selective synthesis of bis-, tris-, or tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borates and permits the use of previously inaccessible functional groups on the heterocyclic moieties. Additionally, bulky sodium and thallium(I) poly(pyrazolyl)borates with reduced donating ability have been obtained for the first time.
