Summary: Ge-rich GeSbTe (GST) alloys are of considerable interest due to their high thermal stability, a specification required for the next generation of embedded digital memories. This stability results from the fact that these alloys do not crystallize congruently but experience phase separation forming Ge and GST-225 nanocrystals upon crystallization. However, the details of the crystallization process remain unclear.

Summary: This study comprehensively reports the morphology and crystalline structure details of iron oxide nanoparticles. Larger nanoparticles were synthesized by increasing the loading of surfactant, and regardless of the size, individual particles were found to consist of core, core-shell interface, shell, and shell-surfactant interface. The study also revealed that the morphology and crystalline characteristics of the nanoparticles were significantly influenced by post thermal processes.

Summary: Composites based on arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and tin oxide were studied for their structure, morphology, and composition after thermal treatment using magnetron sputtering. The transformation of the composite structure during thermal treatment was found to be influenced by the contact of the MWCNT surface with the atmosphere.

Summary: The study demonstrated that nanostructured metallic multilayers (NMMs) exhibit ultrahigh tribocorrosion resistance due to abundant interfaces and nanoscale chemical modulation. The experimental and computational study provides guidance for future material selection and design of multilayered and multi-phase metals for use under extreme environment. Through nanolayering, the surface work function of Al was increased while Cl adatoms adsorb less strongly than that on pure Al, reducing surface reactivity and pitting susceptibility.

Summary: The study characterized alkaline tailing ponds and waste rock dumps from PIC, finding samples with high neutralization potential suitable for neutralizing acid wastewater as alkaline reagents, and classified PIC wastes as non-hazardous according to South African regulations. The research also revealed that the wastes mainly release sulphates and non-toxic elements, with low concentrations of radionuclides below acceptable standards.

Summary: The Phalaborwa Igneous Complex in South Africa has been mined for copper and phosphate for the past six decades, leading to the accumulation of over 4500 Mt. of mining wastes in waste rock dumps and tailing impoundments. This study explores the potential of these wastes as a secondary resource of rare earth elements (REE) through mineralogical and geochemical determinations. The results show that both waste rock dumps and tailings contain notable concentrations of REE, with the potential to extract up to 5.65 kg of REE per ton from tailings through appropriate extraction methods.

Summary: The natural occurrence of acid waters in mountainous porphyry Cu systems creates challenges for water management, but developing hydrogeochemical models can help understand the transport and fate of minerals and metals in these river systems. Using the Yerba Loca creek in the central Andes, Chile as a study area, the model successfully reproduced the observed mineralogical and chemical processes, highlighting key processes controlling the transport and fate of minerals and metals in mountainous river systems.

Summary: The study investigated the comprehensive effects of long storage times and the water hydrochemical signature on the concentration of Phthalate acid esters in bottled water. Results showed that all trends (increase, decrease, or steady) of Total PAEs concentration are possible, depending on the specific hydrochemical signature and phthalate fingerprint of the bottled water.

Summary: This paper presents a mineralogical and geochemical characterization study of a neutral pH Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit in an arid climate. The study reveals that the composition of the gangue material and the gravitational deposition of the tailings control the geochemical and mineralogical associations and distributions of the deposit. The low mobility of potential pollutants suggests a low groundwater pollution risk. The depositional history of the tailings greatly influences the distribution of pyrite.

Summary: Operando synchrotron experiments provide insights into the Mn dissolution/redeposition dynamics in Mn-containing cathodes and demonstrate the effectiveness of ion-capturing polymers in regulating Mn interfacial dynamics. Mn dissolution is a major issue that negatively affects the performance of Mn-based battery materials. This study visualizes and quantifies the dynamic Mn dissolution/redeposition process in Mn-containing cathodes and identifies the contributions of different interfacial degradation mechanisms at different states of charge. The introduction of sulfonated polymers (Nafion) into composite electrodes can successfully modulate the Mn dissolution/redeposition dynamics and improve battery performance.
