Rationale: Host antioxidant defense, consisting of enzymatic antioxidant activity and nonenzymatic antioxidant micronutrients, is implicated in asthma pathogenesis. Studies of antioxidant defense and adult incident asthma have either used measures of antioxidants estimated from questionnaires or not considered enzymatic aspects of host defense. Objectives: We conducted the first study designed and powered to investigate the association of antioxidant defenses on adult incident asthma. Methods: In a nested case-control study, we followed Shanghai women (aged 40-70 years) without prevalent asthma at baseline, over 8 years. Subjects with incident asthma were ascertained prospectively by gold standard testing of symptomatic women and matched to two asymptomatic control subjects. Measurements and Main Results: Baseline urinary F2-isoprostanes, plasma concentrations of antioxidant micronutrients (tocopherols, xanthines, carotenes, and lycopene), and antioxidant enzyme activity (platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase [PAP-AH] and superoxide dismutase) were measured from samples collected before disease onset. Among 65,372 women, 150 (0.24%) developed asthma. F2-isoprostane levels before asthma onset were not different between cases and control subjects. Doubling of a-tocopherol concentrations and PAF-AH activity was associated with 50 and 37% decreased risk of incident asthma (a-tocopherol: adjusted odds ratio = 0.52; 95% confidence interval, 0.32-0.84; PAF-AH: adjusted odds ratio = 0.63; 95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.93). Conclusions: In this prospective study, a-tocopherol, within normal reference ranges, and PAF-AH enzymatic activity were associated with decreased asthma development. These modifiable risk factors may be an effective strategy to test for primary asthma prevention.

Low-complexity PAPR reduction scheme selective mapping cascading improved μ Law companding in CO-OFDM system

Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid technique using low complexity selective mapping and improved mu law companding scheme to reduce the PAPR and complexity in coherent optical OFDM systems. Simulation results demonstrate significant PAPR reduction and complexity optimization with the proposed scheme. Overall, the LCSLM-mu scheme provides better PAPR reduction performance and reduced complexity compared to traditional approaches, making it a viable option for trade-offs among PAPR reduction, BER, and complexity.

Aerodynamic behaviors in supersonic evacuated tube transportation with different train nose lengths

Theoretical optimization and experimental verification of a non-contact damper for high temperature superconducting Maglev systems

Summary: The high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev system has great potential for high-speed transportation, but it suffers from large amplitude vibrations. To address this issue, we designed an electromagnetic shunt damper (EMSD) that can attenuate vibrations without contact. Experimental results showed that the EMSD reduced the vibrations of the HTS maglev vehicle by more than 80% in the resonance region, significantly enhancing the dynamic characteristics of the system.

An adaptive tracking control method for the all-wheel-driving and active-steering articulated vehicle with n-units

Summary: An adaptive tracking control method is proposed for achieving running control of all-wheel-driving and active-steering articulated vehicles with multiple units. The method involves real-time target trajectory generation and an adaptive tracking control system, which enables accurate trajectory tracking and coordinated movement for the vehicles. Simulation results show excellent tracking control performance and the method is compared with different control methods to demonstrate its effectiveness.

This study provides strong technical support for the practical application of Fe/C composites.

Summary: By conducting genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on ancestrally diverse populations, we identified 237 loci associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and further fine-mapped these loci. The majority of T2D associations were found to be driven by a single variant. In addition, our study showed that genetic risk scores derived from ancestrally diverse populations can enhance the transferability of T2D prediction across different populations.

Summary: This paper proposes a CAV driving strategy that takes into account multiple preceding vehicles, utilizing an upgraded ENN model and a time-varying weighting model to achieve cooperative car-following driving control. Numerical simulations demonstrate that this strategy can improve road capacity and suppress traffic oscillations.

Summary: South Asians have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Through a genomewide association meta-analysis, researchers identified 21 novel genetic loci associated with T2D, which are linked to adiposity and glucose metabolism. A polygenic risk score based on South Asian-derived summary statistics can predict T2D risk.

Reduced-order modeling of train-curved-slab-track dynamics with the effects of fastening failures

Summary: Fastening failures on China high-speed railway curved tracks have been frequently found, leading to the need for analyzing their influence on train-track interaction. A train-curved slab track interaction model is built and validated, and it is found that failure of the rail pad can seriously affect the safety of high-speed train operation.

Comprehensive Crashworthiness Studies of Novel Alternately-Assembled Multi-frusta Structures for Energy Absorption Applications
