Summary: This study investigated the relationship between visceral adiposity and general adiposity in patients with stable CAD. The results showed correlations between visceral adiposity and nutritional status, as well as body adiposity index. Most patients with normal nutritional status had some form of adipose tissue dysfunction in the viscera. Furthermore, the body mass index performed better in predicting mild and severe visceral adipose tissue dysfunction compared to body adiposity index.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association of quantitative radiological measures of visceral adiposity in patients with diverticulitis with vital signs, biochemistry results, uncomplicated versus complicated diverticulitis and its interventions. The results showed that patients with a V/S ratio > 0.4 were more likely to undergo emergency intervention, indicating the importance of visceral adiposity in predicting the prognosis of diverticulitis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the visceral adipose index (VAI) and coronary atherosclerotic plaque (CAP) morphology. The results showed that high VAI levels independently predicted an increased coronary artery calcification (CAC) score and CAP morphology. The VAI has the potential to be a screening tool for risk stratification and diagnosing CAP morphology in patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

Summary: This study aims to assess the associations between different adiposity measure indicators and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Southwest Chinese population. The study found that central obesity based on waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) was associated with an increased risk of CVD among female participants. Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) showed the strongest predictive power for CVD. Comprehensive assessment of health risks requires the combination of different anthropometric indexes.

Summary: The study used advanced machine learning algorithms to create non-linear computational models for predicting blood biomarkers from age, adiposity indexes, and vital signs. The findings characterized previously unknown relations between these predictors and blood biomarkers, highlighting differences from expected contributions based on simplistic linear modeling techniques. This work could lead to the formation of new hypotheses for complex biological systems and the creation of predictive models for potential clinical applications.

Summary: The study demonstrates the positive association between the new visceral adiposity index (NVAI) and coronary artery calcification and arterial stiffness in asymptomatic Korean adults. NVAI showed better predictive ability for cardiovascular disease risk compared to other visceral adiposity markers.

Summary: General anesthesia has various side effects, one of which is the temporary impairment of gastrointestinal motility known as postoperative ileus (POI). There are limited medication options for POI, indicating a lack of comprehensive understanding of its mechanisms. The authors propose that the muscarinic cation channel TRPC4 may be a potential molecular target for treating POI, as it is significantly inhibited by general anesthetics.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the GRACE risk score in acute pulmonary embolism (PE) patients for 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The study found that the GRACE risk score, along with the PESI score, were independent risk factors associated with 30-day mortality and the need for thrombolytic treatment. The GRACE risk score showed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting mortality, and its combination with the PESI score helped define high-risk PE patients and predict poor prognosis.

Summary: Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is commonly used to evaluate isolated tricuspid regurgitation (TR), but there is limited research comparing its quantification with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, a novel TTE algorithm was developed to identify severe TR based on TTE parameters. The algorithm had a higher accuracy than the current guidelines' criteria in detecting severe TR by MRI.

Summary: This article presents a case of a patient with known situs inversus who underwent cardiac catheterization and was found to have chronic total occlusion in the right coronary artery. Situs inversus is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by the inverted position of chest and abdominal organs. Cardiac catheterization is uncommon in patients with this particular abnormality, highlighting the importance of customizing techniques to engage coronary arteries and optimize guide support for percutaneous coronary intervention if needed.

Summary: This study evaluated the angiogenic capacity of adipose tissue in patients undergoing cardiac surgeries and found that patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) had reduced angiogenic capacity in their pericardial adipose tissue. Gene expression analysis revealed upregulated expression of the anti-angiogenic gene TSP-1 in CAD patients, with no significant differences in other angiogenic factors. Additionally, inhibiting TSP-1 expression significantly improved angiogenic deficiency in CAD patients.

Summary: The current guidelines recommend prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) for patients with symptomatic heart failure (HF) and low left ventricular ejection fraction. However, not all patients will benefit from ICD treatment. This study evaluated the feasibility of using the MADIT-II-based Risk Stratification Score (MRSS) to predict the survival benefit of prophylactic ICDs in patients with HF. The results showed that different risk subgroups had varying levels of ICD survival benefit.
