Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between VAI, daily energy intake, and MetS in obese children and adolescents. The results showed that VAI was associated with several physiological parameters, while energy intake was positively correlated with BMI z-score, but not with VAI.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that simple and inexpensive anthropometric measurements can help identify obese women at higher risk for developing metabolic syndrome. This study compared the accuracy of different adiposity and body composition indexes in identifying metabolic syndrome in a group of 876 women. The results showed that VAI and CMI performed the best in predicting metabolic syndrome, and these indexes were also the most sensitive and specific. This study highlights the usefulness of VAI and CMI in clinical practice for detecting metabolic syndrome in obese women.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluated the prognostic value of PNI and CONUT scores in patients with glioblastoma. The results showed that a high PNI score was associated with longer overall survival and progression-free survival, while a low CONUT score was associated with longer overall survival. Multivariate analyses confirmed that high PNI score and low CONUT score were independently associated with longer overall survival. Therefore, PNI and CONUT scores have prognostic value in patients with glioblastoma, but further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The aim of our study was to compare the short-term outcomes between obese and non-obese patients who underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery. The results showed no significant difference in in-hospital mortality between the two groups. However, obese patients had a lower wound infection rate while non-obese patients had a lower dialysis rate. These findings suggest that off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery is a safe procedure for obese patients.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and hypertension and prehypertension, and compared its discriminative power with other adiposity indices in the Chinese population. The findings showed that CVAI was significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension, and had superior discriminative ability compared to other indices.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the role of the CONUT score in predicting frequent exacerbations in older patients with COPD. The results showed that a CONUT score >= 5 was the best independent predictor of >= 2 exacerbations (or 1 hospitalization) during the previous year.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the visceral adipose index (VAI) and coronary atherosclerotic plaque (CAP) morphology. The results showed that high VAI levels independently predicted an increased coronary artery calcification (CAC) score and CAP morphology. The VAI has the potential to be a screening tool for risk stratification and diagnosing CAP morphology in patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

Summary: The CONUT score, which represents poor nutritional status, has been shown to be an indicator of adverse outcomes. This retrospective study analyzed data from 369 patients, divided into four groups based on the CONUT score. In-hospital all-cause mortality, length of hospital stay, and the prevalence of sepsis increased with higher CONUT scores. The increased risk associated with a high CONUT score remained significant even after adjusting for confounders. These findings highlight the importance of CONUT scores in predicting short-term in-hospital outcomes and complications.

Summary: The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is a simple screening tool that can detect nutritional status and predict adverse clinical outcomes in specific populations. This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of the CONUT score on mortality and length of stay (LOS) in frail patients admitted to an Internal Medicine Department. The results showed that high CONUT scores were associated with longer LOS, but did not significantly predict mortality.

Summary: There is a substantial rate of misclassification of weight status between BMI and BAI in elderly patients with stable CAD. BMI tends to overestimate weight status, while BAI underestimates it. Despite some correlations between BMI and BAI, they exhibit discrepancies in assessing weight status.

Summary: Interventional cardiology has undergone significant changes, shifting from a diagnostic approach to therapeutic strategies using less invasive, percutaneous methods. Vascular access is a crucial technical step that determines the overall success of cardiovascular procedures. The transradial approach has shown considerable benefits in treating coronary syndromes and ongoing improvements in this technique will further expand its use.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with diverse clinical manifestations, immune dysfunction, and gut microbiota alterations. A healthy balanced diet, rich with food-derived antioxidants, vitamins, and probiotic therapies, may have positive effects on the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress and inflammation in COVID-19. The ecology of the gut microbiota is linked to the transport function of the host receptor ACE2, which may be related to COVID-19.

Summary: Left ventricular assist devices are a treatment option for end-stage heart failure patients. However, bleeding and thromboembolic events significantly impact the survival and quality of life of these patients. Little is known about prognostic factors determining these adverse events. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the hemostasis system and fibrin clot properties in LVAD patients to identify prognostic factors of adverse outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between fetuin-A and various anthropometric parameters, anthropometric indices, body composition, and atherogenic indices, as well as carbohydrate and lipid profile in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results showed a positive correlation between fetuin-A and total cholesterol, but no significant correlation with other anthropometric measurements, atherogenic indices, and biochemical parameters. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between fetuin-A concentrations and body composition, anthropometric indices, and metabolic disorders in women with PCOS.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the usefulness of new anthropometric indices and atherogenic indices in evaluating metabolic disorders, particularly glucose and insulin abnormalities, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results showed that most of the analyzed anthropometric measurements and atherogenic indices were significantly correlated with metabolic disorders, indicating their potential as useful tools for evaluating glucose and insulin abnormalities in PCOS women.

Summary: This study evaluated the epidemiology of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases in Poland in 2018, finding that the majority occurred at home, were witnessed by bystanders, and had a low survival rate. Factors associated with lower survival included epinephrine administration, unwitnessed events, longer response times, older age, and initial non-shockable rhythms. Improvements in bystander CPR and AED use before EMS arrival are needed to enhance outcomes.
