Phylogeny of Rutaceae based on two noncoding regions from cpDNA

Primarily known only by the edible fruits of Citrus, Rutaceae comprise a large (c. 160 genera and 1900 species), morphologically diverse, cosmopolitan family. Of its extraordinary array of secondary chemical compounds, many have medicinal, antimicrobial, insecticidal, or herbicidal properties. To assist with the much-needed suprageneric reclassification and with Studies of evolution of chemical compounds and biogeographic history of the family, here we included sequence data (from two noncoding regions of the chloroplast genome-rps16 intron and trnL-trnF region) from 65 species in 59 genera (more than one third of those in the family) that represented all Subfamilies and tribes and more genera of Toddalioideae and of neotropical groups than previous studies. Results confirmed that Cneorum, Ptaeroxylon, Spathelia. and Dictyoloma form a clade sister to the remaining Rutaceae, none of the subfamilies with more than one genus (except Aurantioideae) is monophyletic, and characters of the ovary and fruit are not reliable for circumscription of subfamilies. Furthermore, clades are better correlated with geographic distributions of the genera than with ovary and fruit characters. Circumscriptions of subfamilies and tribes (and some subtribes of Rutoideae) must be reevaluated. Results are discussed in light of geographic distributions, caryology, chemotaxonomy, and other molecular studies.

Revisiting pericarp structure, dehiscence and seed dispersal in Galipeeae (Zanthoxyloideae, Rutaceae)

Summary: Rutaceae is a large and diverse family, with the tribe Galipeeae standing out for its complex and diverse fruits. We conducted a comparative analysis of the structure and development of fruits from different species in subtribe Galipeinae, Esenbeckia, Helietta, and Metrodorea. All species investigated had enlarging pericarps, with capsules and follicles growing through diffuse cell divisions, and samarium growing more in mericarps' dorsal part, forming wings for wind dispersal. The capsules and follicles dehisced explosively, ejecting seeds. We also made a novel observation regarding the correlation between carpel union and timing of schizocarpy.

Gynoecium structure in Sapindales and a case study of Trichilia pallens (Meliaceae)

Summary: Sapindales is a monophyletic order within the malvid clade of rosids. This review provides a detailed overview of gynoecium features and presents a new structural study based on Trichilia pallens to support systematic relationships and identify patterns of variations in gynoecium features in Sapindales. Several unique and shared characteristics are identified, and a new terminology regarding fusion is proposed to describe the gynoecium of the order.

Target sequence capture of Barnadesioideae (Compositae) demonstrates the utility of low coverage loci in phylogenomic analyses

Summary: Target sequence capture is a cost-effective method for sequencing genomic regions, but missing data in targeted regions can affect phylogenetic inference. This study uses a dataset of spiny sunflowers to test the impact of including or excluding data-poor loci on phylogenies. The results show that missing data affect the topology and branch support of the resulting phylogenies.
