Besides being, vital tools in taxonomic evaluation. the anatomy of plant secretory structures and the chemical Composition of their secretions may contribute to a More thorough Understanding, of the roles and functions of these secretory structures. Here we used standard techniques for plant anatomy and histochemistry to examine secretory structures Oil leaves at different Stages of development of Prockia crucis. to evaluate the origin and development Of the structures. and to identify the disaccharides and monosaccharides ill the exudates. Fructose, glucose. and sucrose constituted tip to 49.60% of the entire secretion. The glands were confirmed to be extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) this is the first report Of their prescence in the genus Prockia. These EFNs are globular, sessile glands. with a central concavity occurring Oil the basal and marginal regions of the leaf. The epidermis surrounding, the concavity is secretory. forming a single-layered palisade that strongly reacts with periodic acid-Schiff's reagent (PAS) and xylidine Ponceau. indicators of total polysaccharides and total proteins. respectively, in the exudate. Oil the basis of the similarity Of these glands to the salicoid teeth in Populus and Salix, We suggest that these three taxa are phylogenetically close.

Biomass production, essential oil's yield and composition of three genotypes of Mikania laevigata Sch. Bip. ex Baker

Maira Christina Marques Fonseca, Mariane Borges Rodrigues de Avila, Italo Antonio Cotta Coutinho, Rosana Goncalves Rodrigues das Dores, Renata Maria Strozi Alves Meira, Andreia Fonseca Silva

Summary: The study explores the production differences among different genotypes of Mikania laevigata leaves and their impact on essential oil yield and chemical composition. Genotype CENARGEN showed higher biomass production, oil yield, and major constituent concentration in essential oils. The season affected the chemical composition of the essential oils, resulting in different major constituents in winter and summer oils.

Summary: Based on the microscopic anatomical observations, this study describes and compares the ontogenesis and morphoanatomy of petiole glands (EFNs) in two different species of Chamaecrista. The results indicate that these EFNs in both species share similar anatomical features and chemical composition but differ in external morphology, which aids in taxonomy.

Trichomes in the megadiverse genus Croton (Euphorbiaceae): a revised classification, identification parameters and standardized terminology

Summary: Trichomes are functional traits that protect plants and provide useful characters for species characterization. In this study, we focused on trichomes in the megadiverse genus Croton, and proposed a new classification based on well-defined parameters, which clarifies existing redundancies and is consistent with anatomical evidence. This contribution will improve communication among taxonomists and promote meaningful morphological comparability in systematic studies.

Diversity and functional roles of floral glands in Malpighiaceae: insights in Lophopterys floribunda WR Anderson & C. Davis

Miller Melo Sanches, Isabel Reis Guesdon, Renata Maria Strozi Alves Meira

Summary: Lophopterys floribunda is an endemic species of Malpighiaceae in Brazil, displaying unique secretory structures in its flowers. The presence of different secretory structures in the petals, bracts, and bracteoles has been observed, which have mutualistic associations with ants and enable a specific visitation pattern. These findings have significant implications for the systematic and ecological studies of Malpighiaceae.

Alterations in the root phenylpropanoid pathway and root-shoot vessel system as main determinants of the drought tolerance of a soybean genotype

Flaviane Silva Coutinho, Rosilene Oliveira Mesquita, Juliano Mendonca Rodrigues, Analu Zanotti, Veronica Aparecida Faustino, Edvaldo Barros, Camilo Elber Vital, Maria Goreti de Almeida Oliveira, Renata Maria Strozi Alves Meira, Thomas Christopher Rhys Williams, Elizabeth Pacheco Batista Fontes, Marcelo Ehlers Loureiro, Humberto Josue de Oliveira Ramos

Summary: Climate change increases precipitation variability, especially in savanna environments. We conducted a study comparing the molecular and physiological parameters between drought-tolerant and sensitive genotypes to understand the mechanisms of drought tolerance. Our findings suggest alterations in the root-shoot system, including water absorption capacity, hormone levels, proteomic profiles, and phenylpropanoid pathways, play crucial roles in promoting drought tolerance. Additionally, we found that the root system has a more significant impact on drought tolerance than shoots. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the genetic, molecular, and physiological traits involved in drought tolerance mechanisms.

Leaf and sepal colleters in Calolisianthus speciosus Gilg (Gentianaceae): a morphoanatomical comparative analysis and mechanisms of exudation

Analu Zanotti, Valeria Ferreira Fernandes, Aristea Alves Azevedo, Renata Maria Strozi Alves Meira

Summary: Calolisianthus speciosus, an endemic species of cerrado and campos rupestres in Brazil, has colleters in both the leaf base and sepal. Anatomical comparison showed that leaf and sepal colleters are similar, non-vascularized structures primarily filled with protein and polysaccharides. The secretion mechanism involves release of contents from secretion-filled vacuoles to intercellular spaces through the external wall, promoting secretion accumulation and release outside of the cell.
