Summary: Long-term supplementation of Glavonoid-rich oil (GRO) derived from licorice root in obese and diabetic mice improved metabolic disorders by reducing body weight and white adipose tissue weight, lowering serum triglycerides and cholesterol levels, and enhancing glucose tolerance. The improved lipid profiles were attributed to reduced de novo lipogenesis in the liver and white adipose tissue, while glucose metabolism may benefit from increased glycolysis in the liver.

Summary: Studies have shown that licoricidin and glabridin have antibacterial properties against the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans, reducing biofilm viability and dextran production. They also attenuated bacterial adherence and acid production, while showing low toxicity towards oral keratinocytes. These findings suggest that licoricidin and glabridin may be promising agents for controlling dental caries.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the antibiofilm and anticariogenic effects of honokiol, a traditional Chinese medicine, on the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans. The results showed that honokiol has inhibitory effects on S. mutans and favorable biocompatibility with human gingival fibroblasts. Therefore, honokiol has potential application as a novel anticaries agent.

Summary: Chemotherapy in cancer treatment has severe side effects, both physical and mental. The gut-brain axis plays a role in these behavioral side effects through communication with altered gut microbes. The study indicates that chemotherapy-altered gut microbes disrupt energy homeostasis, leading to fatigue-like behaviors in mice.

Summary: This study identified key chemical components of glabridin relevant to its weight loss effects, and proposed HSG4112 as a promising novel drug candidate for the pharmacological treatment of obesity. The optimized structural analog HSG4112 significantly exceeded glabridin in weight reduction efficacy and chemical stability, and its administration led to dose-dependent normalization of obesity-related parameters in mice.

Summary: Depression, a highly disabling and lethal mental illness, poses a serious threat to social stability and has become one of the most common disorders worldwide. Panax notoginseng, a traditional Chinese herbal medication, has been used for thousands of years to treat depression and has shown therapeutic effects. Recent research has focused on animal models and pathways influenced by Panax notoginseng, providing empirical evidence for its anti-depressive effects and suggesting new ideas for developing innovative clinical antidepressants with fewer side effects.
