In this short review we attempt to establish and/or strengthen connections between probiotics administration and apoptotic pathway in gastrointestinal tract. The disturbance of apoptosis is mainly deliberated in the framework of insufficient removal of immuno-effector cells that may cause autoimmunity. In the context of the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the commensal bacteria and their products effect on gut and immune cell survival are illustrated. The multitude of mechanisms of probiotics to induce cell death is shortly summarized and some aspects of it are being discussed in greater detail. The mechanism of intestinal cell death induced by probiotic administration and its influence on the immune system and potential benefits of apoptosis induction during probiotic therapy is indicated.

Nanomechanical Hallmarks of Helicobacter pylori Infection in Pediatric Patients

Piotr Deptula, Lukasz Suprewicz, Tamara Daniluk, Andrzej Namiot, Sylwia Joanna Chmielewska, Urszula Daniluk, Dariusz Lebensztejn, Robert Bucki

Summary: This study focuses on the molecular mechanisms related to Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer development. It suggests that the nanomechanical properties of infected tissues could serve as markers of H. pylori presence and the mechanical response of gastric cells to this infection may play a role in promoting cancer development.

Microbiome-Friend or Foe of Pancreatic Cancer?

Jaroslaw Daniluk, Urszula Daniluk, Pawel Rogalski, Andrzej Dabrowski, Agnieszka Swidnicka-Siergiejko

Summary: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a deadly neoplasm with poor prognosis, and the human microbiome may play a role in its pathogenesis. This review summarizes the current understanding of how the microbiome influences pancreatic cancer development and progression, discusses its potential as a marker for diagnosis, progression, and survival, and explores the possibility of modifying the microbiome to improve treatment outcomes.

Liver Pathology in Children with Diagnosed Inflammatory Bowel Disease-A Single Center Experience

Urszula Daniluk, Kamila Kwiatek-Sredzinska, Piotr Jakimiec, Jaroslaw Daniluk, Aleksandra Czajkowska, Dariusz Marek Lebensztejn

Summary: The study revealed that a significant proportion of children with IBD have liver pathology, with the majority of cases being detected after the diagnosis of IBD. Patients with a specified diagnosis of liver pathology were typically younger and had higher ALT activity.

Are Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 and Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-1 Useful as Markers in Diagnostic Management of Children with Newly Diagnosed Ulcerative Colitis?

Aleksandra Czajkowska, Katarzyna Guzinska-Ustymowicz, Anna Pryczynicz, Dariusz Lebensztejn, Urszula Daniluk

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MMP-9 and TIMP-1 and UC phenotypes, disease activity index, and inflammatory markers. The results showed that children with UC had significantly higher levels of these markers in their serum and feces compared to the control group. Additionally, serum MMP-9 correlated with the severity of the disease and other markers, while serum TIMP-1 correlated with disease activity, inflammatory markers, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Serum and fecal levels of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 can be useful in distinguishing UC patients and evaluating disease phenotypes.

The Etiology of Cholelithiasis in Children and Adolescents-A Literature Review

Katarzyna Zdanowicz, Jaroslaw Daniluk, Dariusz Marek Lebensztejn, Urszula Daniluk

Summary: The incidence of gallstone disease is increasing, with complex pathogenesis influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Research on cholelithiasis in children highlights the importance of understanding the disease course and predisposing factors for faster and appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: The coexistence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with pancreatic pathology is rare in children. A retrospective analysis of data from 1538 children diagnosed with IBD in 2014-2021 found that 11.4% of them had pancreatic involvement (PI), with acute pancreatitis (AP) diagnosed in 43.8% and asymptomatic hyperlipasemia (HL) or hyperamylasemia (HA) observed in 50.0%. Routine monitoring of pancreatic enzymes should be performed in patients with IBD, especially after the initiation of azathioprine (AZA) treatment.

Antibiotic-Resistant Strains of Helicobacter pylori in 50 Antibiotic Treatment-Naive Children in Northeast Poland Diagnosed by Gastric or Duodenal Biopsy Between February 2019 and May 2022

Magdalena Kucharska, Katarzyna Zdanowicz, Tamara Daniluk, Robert Bucki, Dariusz Marek Lebensztejn, Urszula Daniluk

Summary: This study assessed antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori in previously untreated children in northeast Poland and found a high proportion of strains resistant to at least 1 antibiotic. These results may aid in the selection of appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in our region.

Allergy to Cow's Milk Proteins and Other Allergens-An Unrecognized Co-Factor of Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome in Children or a Factor Interfering with the Treatment of This Disease? A Case Report

Maciej Kaczmarski

Summary: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) in children is associated with an allergic reaction, leading to kidney damage and excessive protein loss in the urine. This study investigates a child with INS who also has allergies to cow's milk proteins and other allergens. The study finds that the treatment of the allergic reaction, including medication and elimination diet, can improve the course of INS in this child.

Pancreatic Disorders in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Piotr Jakimiec, Katarzyna Zdanowicz, Kamila Kwiatek-Sredzinska, Aleksandra Filimoniuk, Dariusz Lebensztejn, Urszula Daniluk

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of the literature on pancreatic disorders associated with IBD in children, finding that acute pancreatitis is the most common pancreatic disease in pediatric IBD, with manifestations ranging from asymptomatic increase in pancreatic enzyme activity to severe pancreatitis. The involvement of the pancreas can be closely related to the activity of IBD, and it is recommended to include pancreatic enzyme level measurement in the workup of IBD.
