Summary: This study extends the existing knowledge of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) complicating secondary peritonitis by providing detailed microbiological characteristics, including the identification of isolated bacterial pathogens and their potential sources. The study emphasizes the importance of initial antibiotic therapy effective against enterobacteria, ESBL and AmpC β-lactamases producing strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecalis in patients with secondary peritonitis complicated by HAP. Monitoring the respiratory tract bacterial microflora in these patients is also highlighted as important.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the characteristics, prognosis, and risk factors of cirrhotic patients with spontaneous fungal peritonitis (SFP) and fungiascites, as well as to develop a predictive model for early differentiation of SFP/fungiascites from spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP).

Summary: Ascitic fluid infection is a serious complication of liver cirrhosis, and it is crucial to distinguish between spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and secondary peritonitis in these patients due to different treatment approaches. This study analyzed 532 SBP episodes and 37 secondary peritonitis episodes to identify key differentiation criteria. Microbiological characteristics, severity of illness, and clinicopathological parameters were identified as the most important predictors to distinguish between SBP and secondary peritonitis. A point-score model with ten discriminatory features was established, and two cut-off scores were defined to divide patients into low-risk and high-risk groups for secondary peritonitis based on a sensitivity of 95% to rule out or rule in SBP episodes. Overall, the discrimination between secondary peritonitis and SBP remains challenging, but the findings of this study may help clinicians with the crucial differentiation.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of abdominal radiography for diagnosing pneumoperitoneum in animals and investigate the impact of observer experience. The results showed variability in accuracy among veterinarians with different levels of experience. Further research is needed to validate these findings in other populations of animals with pneumoperitoneum.

Summary: This case report describes a Bobtail dog with biliary peritonitis due to gastric perforation, possibly induced by the administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The dog underwent elective surgery and was referred for medical management due to inappetence, mental depression, and gastric vomits with traces of blood. Clinical diagnostic tests confirmed the presence of biliary peritonitis. The dog was euthanized due to worsening clinical conditions. Macroscopic examination revealed free brownish abdominal effusion and a perforating ulcer in the stomach pylorus region.

Summary: The term NAFLD was originally used to describe hepatic fat deposition in association with the metabolic syndrome. Secondary causes of fatty liver disease should be considered during diagnosis and treatment to halt disease progression, while genetic variants may play a role in the development and progression of liver diseases.

Summary: A new rapid and highly sensitive method for clinical diagnosis of FIPV infection was explored in this study, based on the FIPV BS8 N protein monoclonal antibody. A combination method of indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) was used to examine FIP-suspected clinical samples, and the results were 100% consistent with immunohistochemistry (IHC), indicating the potential of this method for rapid and accurate diagnosis of FIPV infection within 24 hours.

Summary: Unguarded severe tricuspid regurgitation caused by rupture of papillary muscle or chordae tendineae is a rare but fatal condition in neonates. Limited experience exists in the management of these patients. This case report highlights the importance of echocardiography in diagnosing and prompt surgical intervention in neonates with tricuspid regurgitation secondary to rupture of chordae tendineae.

Summary: Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu kola, is a medicinal plant with a wide range of active metabolites. However, limited cultivation and overexploitation have led to severe depletion of its resources. This review provides up-to-date information on biotechnological tools for in vitro propagation, secondary metabolite production, and biosynthetic mechanism of Centella asiatica.
