Summary: SRPE-3-Cr(III), a variant of sulfated rhamnose polysaccharide derived from Enteromorpha prolifera, has shown potential as a novel compound to treat diabetes. The study demonstrated that SRPE-3-Cr(III) has hypolipidemic effects and improves lipid metabolism in type 2 diabetes induced by a high-fat, high-sucrose diet. It also regulates adipokines and inflammatory factors, and alleviates tissue damage caused by the diet.

Summary: This study investigated the anticancer properties of peptides isolated from Enteromorpha prolifera, a common tonic food in East Asian countries. The peptides generated by papain digestion showed remarkably strong anticancer activity. One heptapeptide, called HTDT-6-2-3-2, exhibited significant antiproliferation activity and induced cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. The amino acid sequence of this heptapeptide was characterized, and in silico analysis suggested that it could target XIAP, a protein involved in caspase-9 activation inhibition. The findings suggest that this peptide derived from E. prolifera could have potential pharmaceutical applications.

Summary: This study extracted cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from Enteromorpha prolifera and prepared CNC reinforced films for food packaging. The properties of the films could be adjusted by the concentrations of different components. The addition of shellac further improved the food packaging capacity of the films and extended the storage time of chicken breast and cherry tomatoes.

Summary: In this study, an eco-friendly hydrogel based on the polysaccharide extracted from over-breeding macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera was constructed and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. The chemical interactions between carboxyl and sulfate groups of the polysaccharide and Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ were confirmed, ensuring its high adsorption capacity for these metal ions. The interpenetration strategy used to construct the polysaccharide-based double network hydrogel strengthened its mechanical properties, adsorption performance, and recyclability. Overall, this constructed hydrogel is a competitive candidate material for heavy metal ion adsorption due to its low cost and biocompatibility, achieving an innovative application of Enteromorpha prolifera from waste to treasure.

Summary: The polysaccharide from Enteromorpha prolifera (EPP) has been found to improve insulin signaling and whole-body energy metabolism in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. It alleviates diet-induced adiposity and inflammatory response, and increases thermogenesis. These effects are likely mediated by the activation of the PGC-1 alpha-FNDC5/irisin pathways.

Summary: The results of this study showed that dietary seaweed-derived polysaccharides (SDP) could alleviate AFB(1)-induced liver toxicity in broilers. This was achieved by inhibiting phase I detoxification enzymes and upregulating the p38MAPK/Nrf2-mediated phase II detoxification enzyme pathway.

Summary: In order to address the ecological issues brought by Enteromorpha prolifera green tide, researchers have successfully extracted nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) from Enteromorpha prolifera and prepared NFC/PVA composite films. The study demonstrates that the enhancement effect of NFC on PVA composite films is better than that of NCC, showing significant improvements in light transmittance, water resistance, and mechanical properties.

Summary: DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-100 columns were utilized to separate Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharide (EPP) with specific structural fragments. The properties of EPP were evaluated in an ageing diabetic mice model, revealing its potential in improving glucose metabolism and inhibiting the expression of ageing-associated genes. Additionally, EPP showed a probiotic effect on enhancing beneficial microbiota in the gut. Clinical studies are needed to verify these effects.

Summary: This study evaluated the ameliorative effect of polysaccharides derived from the seaweed Enteromorpha prolifera on oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the spleen of Gallus gallus domesticus under heat stress. The results showed that the polysaccharides improved antioxidant capacity, reduced inflammation, and regulated signaling pathways associated with inflammation and anti-inflammation. These findings suggest that polysaccharides from Enteromorpha prolifera can be used as functional food and feed supplements to attenuate oxidative stress and inflammatory responses induced by heat stress.

Summary: In this study, sulfated modification was performed on Grifola frondosa polysaccharide (GFP) using the chlorosulfonic acid-pyridine method. The sulfated GFP (S-GFP) exhibited alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity and changed the conformation of the enzyme. The results suggest that sulfation alters the structure and inhibitory mechanism of polysaccharides.
