Summary: This study presents a statistical field theory for networks of integrate-and-fire neurons with stochastic spike emission, revealing the impact of spike-driven reset of the membrane voltage on population activity. The study uncovers bistability and fluctuation effects in the mean-field dynamics, as well as the roles of spike resets and recurrent inhibition in stabilizing network activity. It also calculates the phase diagram for inhibitory stabilization and finds that wide regions of parameter space exhibit inhibition-stabilized regime.

Summary: In ocean dynamics, two different treatments are found for horizontal pressure gradient force and gravity, with vertical component being much larger than horizontal in both cases. Horizontal pressure gradient force is considered dominant, while horizontal gravity is completely omitted in oceanography. The importance of horizontal gravity is identified using a non-dimensional C number, with global data showing an unexpectedly large C number around 24.

Summary: In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used to rapidly decompose organic dyes from the effluents of paints and textile industries. AgNPs with different sizes were prepared using the polyol reduction method by controlling the molar ratio of substrate/reducing agent and pH of the reaction media. The AgNPs were characterized using various techniques, and their catalytic and antibacterial activities were evaluated. It was found that AgNPs with an average size of 70 nm showed improved photocatalytic potential, degrading 94% of Methylene blue (MB) dye in 80 minutes. The smaller-sized AgNPs exhibited higher antibacterial activity against gram-negative strains of bacteria.

Summary: Strontium substituted CoAl2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized using microwave combustion technique with L-alanine as fuel. Various techniques including XRD, HR-SEM, EDX, DRS, FT-IR and VSM were employed to analyze the synthesized samples. The nanoparticles exhibited nanosized crystalline grains with agglomeration, flake-like nano-sized pores, and fused grain boundaries. The band gap of the nanoparticles was reduced from 3.32 to 3.18 eV. The FT-IR bands in the range of 560 to 1100 cm-1 were attributed to the cubic structure of Sr2+ doped CoAl2O4 nanoparticles. The CoAl2O4/SrO (x = 0.5) nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic performance and higher conversion efficiency (98% conversion and 95% selectivity) for glycerol.
