Herein, organic template-free MFI-type ZSM-5 zeolites were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method using waste materials such as rice husk ash (RHA), rice hull ash (RHuA), and rice straw ash (RSA). The waste materials were locally obtained, precleaned, and properly heat-treated to produce a high-purity crystalline SiO2 that was used in the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolites under autogenous pressure in a short reaction time (5 days). The mineralogical phases, morphology, textural and thermal properties of the synthesized products were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET), temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA). The as-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites showed good crystallinity, and no amorphous material existed in the framework of the ZSM-5 zeolites after calcination and ammonium exchange processes. The characterization results prove that the high crystallinity of RHA as compared to that of the other materials (RHuA and RSA) is due to the high silica content in RHA. The transformation occurs from high-crystallinity RHA into ZSM-5 zeolite and also increases the crystallinity of zeolites. In addition, we have investigated hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites at various concentrations for their potential cytotoxicity effect against the human lung epithelial cancer A549 cells.

Degradation of organic/inorganic pollutants through photofenton membrane bioreactor (PFMBR) and lumped kinetic modeling in pharmaceutical effluent

S. Naveen Kumar, R. Jothi Ramalingam, Muthusamy Karnan, N. P. Kavitha

Summary: Photo-fenton membrane bioreactor (PFMBR) is a wastewater treatment method combining Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) and membrane bioreactor to meet strict limits. It achieves a 98% reduction in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and a 60% reduction in Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Gas chromatography analysis confirms the complete degradation of pharmaceutical compounds. The use of lumped kinetics modeling predicts the degradation of organic/inorganic pollutants, with an overall activation energy of 51.79 kJ/mol.

Tamed synthesis of AgNPs for photodegradation and anti-bacterial activity: Effect of size and morphology

Yasir Zaman, Muhammad Zahid Ishaque, Saira Ajmal, Muhammad Shahzad, Abu Bakar Siddique, Muhammad Usman Hameed, Humaira Kanwal, R. Jothi Ramalingam, Manickam Selvaraj, Ghulam Yasin

Summary: In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used to rapidly decompose organic dyes from the effluents of paints and textile industries. AgNPs with different sizes were prepared using the polyol reduction method by controlling the molar ratio of substrate/reducing agent and pH of the reaction media. The AgNPs were characterized using various techniques, and their catalytic and antibacterial activities were evaluated. It was found that AgNPs with an average size of 70 nm showed improved photocatalytic potential, degrading 94% of Methylene blue (MB) dye in 80 minutes. The smaller-sized AgNPs exhibited higher antibacterial activity against gram-negative strains of bacteria.

K. M. Mohamed, J. John Benitto, J. Judith Vijaya, M. Bououdina

Summary: Antibiotics are pervasive contaminants in water systems, posing a threat to aquatic life and humans. Excessive use of antibiotics has led to unintended consequences, with hospital and industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of antibiotics and other drugs. This review discusses recent advances in the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, antidepressants, contraceptives, and anti-inflammatories using ZnO-based nanostructures. The study provides comprehensive understanding of the degradation process and examines the challenges and future outlook in using ZnO-based nanomaterials for wastewater treatment.

Influence of Sr2+ substitution on structural, optical and catalytic properties of CoAl2O4 nanoparticles

G. Anitha, R. Jothiramalingam, M. Sukumar, A. Roniboss, S. Yuvaraj, G. Ramkumar, M. Sundararajan, S. Arokiyaraj

Summary: Strontium substituted CoAl2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized using microwave combustion technique with L-alanine as fuel. Various techniques including XRD, HR-SEM, EDX, DRS, FT-IR and VSM were employed to analyze the synthesized samples. The nanoparticles exhibited nanosized crystalline grains with agglomeration, flake-like nano-sized pores, and fused grain boundaries. The band gap of the nanoparticles was reduced from 3.32 to 3.18 eV. The FT-IR bands in the range of 560 to 1100 cm-1 were attributed to the cubic structure of Sr2+ doped CoAl2O4 nanoparticles. The CoAl2O4/SrO (x = 0.5) nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic performance and higher conversion efficiency (98% conversion and 95% selectivity) for glycerol.
