Research conducted during the 1980s demonstrated Se deficiency in humans. Increased inclusion of selenium in animal feeds started from the year 2000 onwards. The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of selenium inclusion in animal feeds on human selenium status and dietary habits of the Serbian population related to food of animal origin. Plasma selenium concentration in healthy adult volunteers, including residents of one of the regions with the lowest (Eastern Serbia, n = 60) and of one of the regions with the highest Se serum levels reported in the past (Belgrade, n = 82), was determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. Multivariate analysis was employed to determine the correlation between Se plasma levels and dietary intake data derived from food frequency questionnaires and laboratory tests. The mean plasma Se level of the participants was 84.3 +/- 15.9 g/L (range: 47.3-132.1 g/L), while 46% of participants had plasma Se levels lower than 80 g/L. Frequency of meat, egg, and fish consumption was significantly correlated with plasma selenium level (r = 0.437, p = 0.000). Selenium addition to animal feed in the quantity of 0.14 mg/kg contributed to the improvement of human plasma selenium levels by approximately 30 mu g/L.

MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION AND IRON STATUS AMONG FEMALE STUDENTS: THE INTERVENTION STUDY

Neda Milinkovic, Milica Zekovic, Margarita Dodevska, Brizita Dordevic, Branimir Radosavljevic, Svetlana Ignjatovic, Nevena Ivanovic

Summary: This study examined the effect of short-term magnesium (Mg) supplementation on iron status in healthy female participants. The results showed that Mg concentration had a significant trend in affecting oxygenated hemoglobin. Serum Mg concentration positively correlated with transferrin saturation at levels greater than 0.9mmol/L, and ionized Mg concentration higher than 0.6mmol/L was positively correlated with transferrin saturation and serum iron.

Summary: The study in Serbia assessed exposure and risk of Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk and milk-based food for children. AFM1 was most commonly found in pasteurized and UHT milk, with higher exposure risk for children aged 1-3 due to consumption habits. However, the overall risk was considered low with MOE values above 10,000, indicating no significant health concerns. Regular monitoring and prevention of AFM1 contamination in milk are recommended to reduce risk, especially for children.

Summary: Inflammation, immune suppression, and oxidative stress play a significant role in the initiation, presentation, and perpetuation of testicular germ-cell tumors. This study analyzed the preoperative inflammatory markers and oxidative damage products in patients with GCT. The results showed correlations between these markers and tumor stage, metastatic diseases, and clinical variables. Inflammatory and redox indices may enhance personalized risk assessment for GCT patients, complementing established tumor markers and standard prognostic variables.

The Polymorphisms in GSTO Genes (GSTO1 rs4925, GSTO2 rs156697, and GSTO2 rs2297235) Affect the Risk for Testicular Germ Cell Tumor Development: A Pilot Study

Milos Petrovic, Tatjana Simic, Tatjana Djukic, Tanja Radic, Ana Savic-Radojevic, Milica Zekovic, Otas Durutovic, Aleksandar Janicic, Bogomir Milojevic, Boris Kajmakovic, Marko Zivkovic, Nebojsa Bojanic, Uros Bumbasirevic, Vesna Coric

Summary: This pilot study aimed to assess the relationship between polymorphisms of GSTO1, GSTO2, and GSTO2 and the risk for testicular GCT development. The results showed that carriers of GSTO1*C/A*C/C genotype had an increased risk for testicular GCT, as well as carriers of GSTO2rs2297235*A/G*G/G and GSTO2rs156697*A/G*G/G genotypes. In conclusion, the study suggests that GSTO polymorphisms may affect the antioxidant activity of GSTO isoenzymes, predisposing susceptible individuals to a higher risk for testicular GCT development.
