Genomic signatures of vegetable and oilseed allopolyploid Brassica juncea and genetic loci controlling the accumulation of glucosinolates

Jinghua Yang, Jing Wang, Zhangping Li, Xuming Li, Zhesi He, Lili Zhang, Tongyun Sha, Xiaolong Lyu, Sheng Chen, Yuanguo Gu, Zaiyun Li, Zhongyuan Hu, Hongju He, Ian Bancroft, Mingfang Zhang

Summary: This study sequenced the genomes of vegetable and oilseed Brassica juncea, revealing structural variations and genetic loci associated with stress responses. Additionally, two major loci responsible for glucosinolates biosynthesis were identified, providing valuable information for polyploidy genome evolution studies and genomic selections for crucial traits.

Summary: Heat stress events during flowering in Brassica crops reduce grain yield and are expected to increase in frequency due to global climate change. Genetic variation in heat tolerance was found across diverse geographic origins, morphotypes, and flowering phenologies in a global collection of Brassica rapa accessions.

Creating and De Novo Improvement of New Allopolyploid Crops for Future Agriculture

Yibo Teng, Mengke Su, Lulu Liu, Sheng Chen, Xunyan Liu

Summary: The development of climate change resilient crops is important for supporting the growing world population. Polyploidy plays a key role in plant evolution, shaping biodiversity, growth vigor, environmental adaptation, and chemical compounds. Creating new allopolyploids through sexual and asexual reproduction methods have potential benefits but may also lead to undesirable traits. Recent advancements in genome editing offer a route to improve newly synthesized allopolyploids and meet agricultural demands.

Transient daily heat stress during the early reproductive phase disrupts pod and seed development in Brassica napus L.

Sheng Chen, Katia Stefanova, Kadambot H. M. Siddique, Wallace A. Cowling

Summary: Transient daily heat stress during flowering of canola due to global warming poses a threat to grain production. The impact of heat stress on seed yield depends on treatment duration and temperature, with varying responses observed among different genotypes.
