Sustainable manufacturing practices and the circular economy have recently received significant attention in academia and within industries to improve supply chain practices. Manufacturing industries have started adopting sustainable manufacturing practices and a circular economy in their supply chain to mitigate environmental concerns, as sustainable manufacturing practices and a circular economy result in the reduction of waste generation and energy and material usage. The leather industry, in spite of it contributing remarkably to a country's economic growth and stability, does not bear a good image because of its role in polluting the environment. Therefore, the leather industries of Bangladesh are trying to implement sustainable manufacturing practices as a part of undertaking green supply chain initiatives to remedy their image with the buyer and to comply with government rules and regulations. The main contribution of this study is to assess, prioritize and rank the drivers of sustainable manufacturing practices in the leather industries of Bangladesh. We have used graph theory and a matrix approach to examine the drivers. The results show that knowledge of the circular economy is paramount to implementing sustainable manufacturing practices in the leather industry of Bangladesh. This study will assist managers of leather companies to formulate strategies for the optimum utilization of available resources, as well as for the reduction of waste in the context of the circular economy. Impediments of product recovery in circular supply chains: Implications for sustainable development

Dindayal Agrawal, Ashish Dwivedi, Anchal Patil, Sanjoy Kumar Paul

Summary: This study aims to determine the obstacles of product recovery and circular supply chain (CSC) towards sustainable production and consumption in manufacturing organizations. Potential obstacles are identified from literature and expert consultation, and a fuzzy VIKOR approach is used to prioritize them. The study reveals that lack of collaboration from supply chain performers, absence of tax policies to facilitate CSC models, and limited expertise, technology, and information on CSC practices are the critical obstacles to product recovery in CSCs. The findings can assist industry managers and practitioners in developing strategies for sustainable development.

The role of buyers justice in achieving socially sustainable global supply chains: A perspective of apparel suppliers and their workers

Mohammad Alghababsheh, Atif Saleem Butt, Syed Mithun Ali

Summary: The absence of an effective public model in developing countries has driven clothing brands to rely on a private voluntary formal model to manage suppliers' poor working conditions, but this model has been criticised for overlooking the root causes of these issues. This study suggests that buyers' unfair practices can drive suppliers' internal social issues, and proposes that buyers' justice can ensure suppliers' social performance. The analysis of survey responses from 97 suppliers in Jordan reveals that only distributive and procedural justice, but not interactional justice, are positively related to suppliers' internal social performance, and improving this performance can diminish supply operational risk.

Implementing smart waste management system for a sustainable circular economy in the textile industry

Naimur Rahman Chowdhury, Sanjoy Kumar Paul, Tapan Sarker, Yangyan Shi

Summary: In recent years, global supply chains have been redesigning their processes to achieve sustainable production and consumption, leading to the concept of a zero-waste circular economy gaining attention. The textile industry, which has a significant environmental impact, is attempting to transition to a circular economy model through Smart Waste Management Systems (SWMS). However, challenges arise due to industry complexity, changing consumer behavior, and lack of standards. This study addresses these challenges using a hybrid approach and highlights the critical step of efficient waste recovery monitoring and control in adopting SWMS.
